SOCIAL IMAGINATION
Wright Mills was coined the famous phrase “Sociological Imagination”
which is used throughout sociology today.
Mills defined Sociological Imagination as “the vivid awareness of the
relationship between experience and the wider society”
SOCIAL THEORIES
Theory is a general abstract of facts that has been carefully studied but still
needs more validation and re-investigation. In sociology, there are lots of
social theories.
STRUCTURAL-FUNCTIONAL THEORY
• This theory was supported by E. Durkheim, M. Weber, H. Cooley W.I. Thomas
and W. Pareto.
• They believed that society has several, interrelated and interdependent parts and
each part has a certain function. Each part has to perform to maintain the balance;
otherwise, if one fails to function correctly, imbalance will occur.
CONFLICT THEORY
This theory was supported by Karl Marx, C. Wright Mills, L. Coser and R. Dahrendorf.
They believed that society is in continuous struggle.
Society is in a state of perpetual conflict because of competition for limited resources. It
holds that social order is maintained by domination and power, rather than consensus and
conformity.
"Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and
the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people".
INTERACTION THEORY
This theory was popularized by Geoge Herbert Mead, Erving Goffman, Richard Schaefer
and Robert Lamm. They argued that society is reflected in every socialized individual
and that its external forms of and structure are reflected through the social interactions
among individuals.
EXCHANGE THEORY
The proponents of this theory were George Homans and Peter Blau. They believed
that the society is in mutual expectation with men and that there is an equal
reciprocation.
Social exchange theory is a social psychological perspective that explains social
change and stability as a process of negotiated exchanges between parties. Social
exchange theory posits that all human relationships are formed by the use of a
subjective cost-benefit analysis and the comparison of alternatives.
GLOBALIZATION IN THE PHILIPPINE SOCIETY
Globalization has become a key factor in the development of a country and the
world economy as well. Some regard it as hostile especially to developing countries like
ours.
In the Philippines, globalization has allowed major changes like more labor. It
has attracted more Filipino and foreign companies to invest and pour out additional
capitals. It has brought about technologies mostly computers and software and also
telecom companies, airlines and many more. Globalization has opened the economy to
foreign trade and investments.
