    SOIL INVESTIGATION FOR DESIGN OF PAVEMENT

    1.0 INTRODUCTION:

    The work of preparation of detailed project report for IMPROVEMENT AND

    UPGRADATION OF LINK ROAD FROM NH-07 AMARGARH, JOHRON, KIARDA,

    JAGATPUR, IPH COLONY MAJRA 0/00 TO 4/855 KM was awarded to M/S C&E

    Consultancy, Shimla .The work of laboratory investigations of the soil samples for design of

    pavement (to evaluate crust thickness) of this road was assigned to M/s JJ Engineering Services

    by the consultant.

    2.0 SCOPE:

    The scope of the job as decided by the departmental officers is detailed below &
    sample were collected from site in presence of department officials.

    i) Determination of Maximum dry density (M.D.D.) & Optimum moisture content


    (O.M.C.)
    ii) Soil classification as per IS: 1498.
    iii) Determination of laboratory C.B.R. Value at to calculate crust thickness under 4
    days soaked conditions.
    iv) Total No. of samples collected from site for the laboratory investigations are 5.
    v) Traffic Census Survey for 3 days.
    vi) Pavement Design.

    3.0 LABORATRY INVESTIGATIONS OF SOIL SAMPLES OF ROAD
    In order to have an objective appraisal of the Sub grade condition; Grain size analysis,

    Atterberg limits, Natural Moisture content, Field dry density, MDD/OMC, Soil

    classifications, Pavement composition details & CBR tests were carried out as per IS

    2720 ( Diff. parts ), test report appended here with.

    3.1 Characteristics of the Embankment soil Material

    Based on the Grain size analysis and the Atterberg limits, the soil classification is ML and

    laboratory CBR values of soil samples varies from 9.14 % to 10.58 % mentioned in the table

    attached.

    3.2 Condition of the Exiting Embankment

    Since the Avg. CBR values observed for soil samples works out to 9.68 %

    4.0 CARRIAGEWAY WIDTH:


    The carriage way width adopted is 3.05 m.

    5.0 PAVEMENT DESIGN

    On the basis of the census carried by us the average daily traffic was found to be 175,
    growthrate adopted as per code is 6% and as per IRC: SP - 72 – 2015, the maximum traffic
    intensity for the section under consideration has been taken with gross laden weight of 3.0 tons
    or more. The MSA was calculated on the basis of IRC: SP - 72 – 2015 and is attached with the
    DPR .
    As per the design calculation cumulative ESAL is 262068 which is above 200,000 TO
    300,000 which falls in traffic category of T5.

    Therefore, as per IRC: SP - 72 – 2015-page number 22 Fig 4 pavement thickness for CBR 9.68%
    which falls in category of very good CBR and traffic category T5 was computed as below:

    a.) Granular Sub-Base course, (G.S.B.) = 125 mm

    b.) Granular Base course, (W.B.M 2) = 75 mm

    c.) WBM 3 = 75 mm

    d.) Surface dressing, (Bituminous concrete) = 30 mm.

    IMPORTANT NOTES: --
    1. All the above are compacted thicknesses of the respective layer to be
    Constructed as per the relevant M.O.R.D. specifications.
    2. The top of the sub-grade must be above the adjacent ground level as per
    the provisions of IRC & M.O.R.D specifications with suitable cross
    Drainage works provided at appropriate locations along the alignment.
    3. In case of any variation from the design traffic volume and above assumed parameters; the
    design thickness of pavement has to be suitably modified as per plate given in
    IRC: SP-72-2015 on page 22.
    4. Efficient surface drainage of water both laterally and longitudinally from
    The pavement surface, shoulders and sides must be treated to have minimum
    Ingress of surface water into the sub-grade below /pavement layers.
