PALMA
Teacher
Objectives:
a. Describe and Illustrate a rational algebraic expression.
b. Recall the basic rule of fractions.
c. Simplify rational algebraic expressions
LESSON 5: RATIONAL EXPRESSIONS
 An expression that is a quotient of two expressions is called an algebraic fraction or
a rational expression.
 The denominator of a rational expression must not be equal to 0. When the
denominator is 0, the expression is undefined.
Example:
( x− y )( x + y )
( x− y ) 2
 To simplify we first factor the polynomials then cancel any common factors.
( x− y )( x + y ) x+ y
= (x-y)2 is equal to (x-y)(x-y) so we can
( x− y ) 2 x− y
cancel out one of the (x-y)

Dividing Out Common Factors

Step 1 – Identify any factor which are common to both the numerator and the denominator.
5x
5(x−7)  The numerator and
denominator have a common
factor.
 Five is the common factor

Step 2 – Divide out the common factors.

5x x
 5 can be divided to 1 5(x−7) = x−7
 The x remain in the numerator
 The (x – 7) remains in the denominator

Factoring the Numerator and Denominator 3 x 2+9 x

PALMA
 Factor the Numerator
 Factor the Denominator
 Divide out the common factors.
 Write in Simplified form

Step 1: Look for common factors to both terms in the numerator

3 x 2+9 x
- Both 3 and 9 can be factor 3
12 x 3
 Both x2 and x can be factor to x
Step 2: Factor the numerator
3 x 2+9 x 3 x (x +3)
12 x 3 12 x 3
Step 3: Look for common factors to the terms in the denominator and factor
3 x 2+9 x
 The denominator only has one term. The 12 and
12 x 3
x3 can be factored.
 12 can be factored into 3 x 4
 X3 can be written as x x2

x 2−7 x +12
Example: Simplify
9−x 2
x 2−7 x +12
Solution:
9−x 2
(x−4)( x−3)
= Factor the numerator and denominator
(3−x )(3+ x)
(x−4 )(x−3)
= Factor – 1 out of (3 – x) to get (-3 + x)
(−1)(−3+ x )(3+ x)
(x−4 )(x−3)
= Cancel since (x – 3) and (-3 + x) are equivalent
(−1)(−3+ x )(3+ x)
( x−4)
= Multiply (x – 4) by -1 to get – x + 4
(−1 ) (3+ x)
−x+ 4 4−x
= or
3+ x 3+ x

Objectives:
a. Recall multiplication and division of rational numbers.
b. Multiply rational expressions.
c. Divide rational expressions.

MULTIPLYING AND DIVIDING RATIONAL EXPRESSION

- A rational expression is in simplified form when its numerator and denominator
have no common factors (other than ± 1)

denominators, Simplify

inverses of each other.
Example 3: Add.

MATHEMATICS 8 PREPARED BY: JENICE MARIE G.

9
PALMA
5x2 x 2+1
+
2 x−1 1−2 x
Solution:
The rational expressions are dissimilar since the denominators are not the same but notice
that 2x – 1 is the additive inverse of 1 -2x. Hence, we can rewrite the expressions as;
5x2 x 2+1 5x2 x 2+ 1
+ = +
2 x−1 1−2 x 2 x−1 −1(2 x −1)
5x2 −1(x 2+1)
= +
2 x−1 2 x −1
5 x 2−x 2−1
= Apply the distributive property.
2 x−1
4 x 2−1
= Simplify
2 x−1
(2 x+1)(2 x−1)
= Factor
2 x−1
(2 x+1)(2 x−1)
= Cancel
2 x−1
= 2x – 1

Adding and subtraction of dissimilar fractions.

Reminder:
1. Find the LCD of the given fractions.
2. Change the fractions into similar fractions. “Always express the
3. Add. answer in lowest terms.”

Example:
7 2 8 x 3x 4
a. , b. , c. ,
3 x 3 6 x2 y x−2 x+2 4 x 2−9 2 x 2+ x−3

Solution: Factor each denominator

a. 3x3 = 3 x x x
6x2y = 3 2 x x y

MATHEMATICS 8 PREPARED BY: JENICE MARIE G.

10
PALMA
3 2 x x x y
The LCD is 3 2 x x x y = 6x3y.
Notice that x and y are used the greatest number of times they occur in any one
denominator.

b. The denominators have no common factor. The LCD is (x – 2)(x + 2)

c. Factor each denominator
4x2 – 9 = 2x + 3 2x – 3
2
2x + x – 3 = 2x + 3 (x – 1)
The LCD is 2x + 3 2x – 3 (x – 1)
Example: Combine operation of addition and subtraction.
x 5 x
1. 2 + 2 - 2
x +11 x +30 x +9 x +20 x +10 x+ 24
x 5 x
2. Solution: 2 + 2 - 2
x +11 x +30 x +9 x +20 x +10 x+ 24
x 5 x
= + - Factor the
(x +5)(x+ 6) (x ¿¿ 2+5)(x+ 4) ¿ (x +6)( x+ 4)
denominator
x ( x+ 4 )+ 5 ( x +6 )−x (x+ 5)
= The LCD is (x + 5)(x + 6)(x + 4)
( x+ 5 ) (x+ 6)(x+ 4)

x2 + 4 x+ 5 x +30−x2 −5 x
=
( x +5)(x+ 6)(x+ 4)
