ASSIGNMENT NO. 3 (PRELIM)

POWER PLANT STEAM

Operation Principles of Steam Turbine.

1. Explain why main condenser is kept on vacuum

-The basic reason for maintaining vacuum is to allow the steam to expand to that low pressure.

2. Explain how to keep main condenser in vacuum

-Steam when condensed into water reduces in volume drastically at the order of thosands
depending upon the pressure existing inside the condenser, e.g. around 14500 times at 0.1 bar.
This enormous reduction in volume creates the vacuum inside the condenser. In other words,
the specific volume of water at a given pressure is many times lower than that of steam. (can be
read from a steam table). The ejector or vacuum pumps aid in removing the non condensible
gases thereby enhancing the condensation / heat transfer to the cooling water.

3. Explain the function of maneuvering valve

- Comprises a novel arrangement of parts whereby a single handle suffices for controlling the
entire forward and reversing operations, said parts being so arranged that it is impossible for the
engineer to manipulate the valves except according to 'a definite and predetermined
plan, thus avoiding all danger of mistakes in operation due to any cause whatsoever.
Maneuvering valve is mounted on the manifold and is operated by the maneuver forward
solenoid and the maneuver aft solenoid. This valve is energized automatically during the latter
part of the advance and retraction operation to control the speed of the grab after braking has
been completed.

The oil pressure developed by each pump increases with increasing turbine speed. When the
pressure increases to a value corresponding to 108% of the maximum rated speed, the sensing
piston on the maneuvering valve causes a pilot valve to open and drain oil from the operating
piston to close the ahead throttle valve.

4. Describe how to keep the hot well level of condenser

- The bottom area of the condenser is the hotwell. This is where the condensate collects and the
condensate pump takes its suction. ... The temperature and flow rate of the cooling water
through the condenser controls the temperature of the condensate. This in turn controls the
saturation pressure (vacuum) of the condenser.

Set Points Of Levels In Condenser Hot Well

1. Generally we try to maintain hot well level at 0 MM or normal level.

2. If hot well level falls below 0 mm, normal make up valve will open and allow DM
(demineralize) water to condenser in order to maintain normal level. At Low level this

normal make up valve will be fully opened. The hot well level is to be maintained to normal

level (200mm). This is why because, if the water level in the hot well goes below the desired
level,

the vacuum level increases so that the low pressure turbine blades gets sucked along with the

steam by the vacuum pressure and if the water level in the condenser raises above the
desired

level, then deterioration of vacuum takes place.

5. Describe the importance of draining inside turbine casing

-To avoid slugging nozzles and blades inside the turbine with condensate on start-up; this can
break these components from impact. The blades were designed to handle steam, not wturbi

6. Describe the gland steam pressure is controlled by gland steam make – up valve and spill valve

- The gland steam system is operated by a control system of supply make-up and spill control
valves, which maintain the system at a constant pressure, ensuring no air leakage at the glands.
Excess steam pressure at the turbine glands passes to the gland condenser.
