Course Description and Aims:

Research writing is a process that enhances students’ ability to comprehend and analyze a subject
which they have not worked upon before, and as such is considered to be a fundamental aspect of
intellectual inquiry and academic engagement for university students. This course is, therefore,
designed specifically to teach undergraduate students how to organize and write a research paper.
It covers researching, bibliography, citation, and the writing process. Students are graded on their
ability to complete research exercises and write their own research paper.
By the end of this course, students should be able to
• write clear, grammatical, coherent, and interesting research papers
• see writing as a process that includes pre-writing, drafting, critiquing, editing, and rewriting
• acquire the skills and objectivity that will help them evaluate their own academic writing and
that of others.

Course Requirements:

• Class attendance and active participation in discussion. You are expected to be respectful of
the different views of your fellow classmates during debates. Personal attacks will not be
tolerated. (10%)
• Midterm Exam (20 %)
• Final Exam (50 %)
• Coursework in the form of class presentations, written assignments, and quizzes etc. (20%)

the inclusion of more than five words copied directly from another source without proper reference
will be regarded as plagiarism. Academic dishonesty is punishable (failing the assignment or grade
reduction).
