EXERCISE 1

Beam section : 20 cm x 40 cm
Gk = 15 kN/m
Qk = 10 kN/m
Concrete C25/30
Steel H/A Fe500
G1 = self weight of the beam = 23.5kN/m3 x 0.2m x 0.4m = 1.88kN/m
Fed= 1.3G1 + 1.3Gk + 1.5Qk = 1.3x1.88 + 1.3x15 + 1.5x10 = 36.944kN/m

2. Calculation Of The Area Of Steel ( As )
a) Area of steel for longitudinal bars for moment reinforcement
Condition to be verified : MRd > MEd
MRd = Fc*(d – (0.4)*xn)
Fc = 0.8 *x* b * fcd
d = 0.9*h

xn = As*fyd/(0.8*d*fcd)
(As used here to obtain xn was calculated using As adopted.The steel section was
chosen such that As provided (/adopted) > As required)
fyd = fyk/1.15

Where:
Fc is the force of compression on the concrete section of the beam
d=effective depth
xn is he position of the neutral axis
fyd = design strength of the steel of class Fe500
fcd = design strength of concrete of class C25/30

MEd = (Fed*x/2)*(l-x)
𝐴𝑠 = 𝑀𝐸𝑑/(0.9 × 𝑑 × 𝑓𝑦𝑑) this is the required value for As
The steel reinforcement adopted here have As= 804.25mm2 and As=923.63mm2
Corresponding to bars of 4phi 16 for [0,1.25] and 5phi 14 for [1.875,3.125]
We will use 4phi 16 along the length of the beam and 2phi 10 along the length from
[2.5,3.125]

From the figure above we see that MEd is always greater than the MRd at the same
point hence the condition is verified

b) Area of steel for shear reinforcement

Condition to be verified : VRd > Ved

 From the calculated values of shear VEd, we select the maximum value
and calculate the maximum shear reinforcement. In this case, VEd =
92.36 kN

 Next, we compute the resistance of the concrete to shear VRdc

VRdc = [CRd,c k (100 l fck)1/3 + k1 cp ] bw d > VRdc = [nmin + k1

cp ] bw d
fck in MPa
CRdc = 0.18/c
c = partial safety factor for the concrete (assumed = 1.5)
k = 1 + (200/d)1/2 ≤ 2.0 with d in millimeters
l = Asl / (bw d) ≤ 0.02 reinforcement ratio corresponding to Asl
Asl = longitudinal steel area
k1 = 0.15
cp = Nsd / Ac average stress in the concrete due to the axial
compressive force Nsd
Ac = concrete area
bw = minimum width of the cross-section
d = effective depth
vmin = 0.035 k3/2 fck ½

Using the above formula, VRdc= 47.91 KN < VEd implying we need shear
reinforcement.

 Shear reinforcement
From the figure below,we can see that VRd=170.9291kN is greater than VEd
(shear FEd) so the condition VRd > Ved is verified
we had an area of steel Asw = 100.5714mm2 (phi 8) with spacing s=200mm

For the sections of the beam where the shear is < Vrd, we use a minimum
reinforcement
In the figure below, we had an area of steel Asw = 100.5714mm2 with spacing
s=250mm
The figure below shows a plot of the resistive shear VRd against the position
x(m) and also the reflected plot (plot of –Vrd). Also included is a plot of the
project shear (VEd)

Distribution of reinforcement in the elements

EXERCISE 2
G1= 1.3 x 23.5 x 0.2 x 0.4 = 2.444kN/m
F1d= 1.5 x F1k = 1.5 x 30kN = 45kN/m
F2d= 1.5 x F2k = 1.5 x 30kN = 45 kN/m
Qd= 1.5 x Qk = 1.5 x 15kN = 22.5 kN/m
Gd= 1.3 x Gk = 1.3 x 15kN = 22.5 kN/m

1. Sollicitations in the beam

We use the method of superposition to compute the moments, shear and axial forces at
various points of the beam.
For the moment:

M(z) = (Pz/2)(l-z)
+

M(z) = F1d*z/2 for 0≤z≤l/2

M(z) = -F1d*z/2 for l/2≤z≤l
+
M(z) = 0

For Shear,

2. Sollicitations in the Column

For moment:

For shear,

EXERCISE 3
1. unfavorable combinations
let t1 represent the first travee
t2 represent the second travee
t3 represent the third travee

Comb 1: unfavourable for travee 1 and 3

1.35Gk + 1.5Qt1 + 1.5Qt3
Comb 1: unfavourable for travee 2
1.35Gk + 1.5 Qt2

2. Sollicitations in the pillar

FEd = 1.35xGk + 1.5xQk
= 1.35x15 +1.5x15
= 63.0kN/m
Let the 2 support points of the 2 columns be A and B on the left
and right respectively
Vertical reactions: YA and YB = Fed/2 = 63.0/2 = 31.5kN/m
The normal force N in both columns is equal
N=31.5kN
3. Dimensioning and verification of a rigid footing considering the soil
strength of adm=0.25N/mm2

column section :

20cm=b
40cm=a

We want to dimension a footing of dimensions :

B

Assuming a concrete cover for the foundation (d’) =50mm

adm=0.25N/mm2
Let S represent the surface area of the footing
We select S such that S≥ N/adm
S≥ (31.5x103N)/( 0.25N/mm2)
S≥0.63m2
Taking an S value of 0.8m2 with dimensions 0.8mx1.0m, we have a
good section.
Footing height (h)
𝐴−𝑎 𝐵−𝑏
h≥ ( 4 + 5𝑐𝑚; 4 + 5𝑐𝑚)
h≥ (22.5cm; 20cm)
we assume h=25cm

Effective depth d = h-d’ = 25cm-5cm

fyk = 500MPa
fyd = fyk/1.15= 435MPa
fyd*=0.85 x 435MPa
Asx= N x ( B-b)/(8 x d x fyd*)
=(31.5 x 103x(800-400)mm)/(8*200*369.5)
=213.12mm2
Asy= N x ( A-a)/(8 x d x fyd*)
= 316.69mm2
