TUTORIAL 2

1. (a) (i) RMS value is the effective value of the ac signal needed in the expression for
average power to put the AC power in the same form as the expression for DC power in
a resistor.
Peak value
Or RMS value  [1]

(ii) admittance is the inverse of impedance [1]

(b) [1]
Phase angle for the current is 45° [1]

(c) Reactance is the term given to the ratio of voltage to current when they are out of phase
by   , otherwise, when they are in phase, the ratio is called resistance [2]

5. (a) frequency (angular or cyclic), impedances (capacitance, resistance) [1]

(b) at balance point; [1]

Cross-multiplying and simplifying we get;

Equating imaginary parts of equation 1 and simplifying;

C4 / C3  R2 / R1  R3 / R4
-------------equation 3; Where [1]

Equations 2 and 3 are the balance conditions for the bridge, i.e. when these equations are
satisfied then the bridge is at balance point. [1]

(c) From equation 2 and substituting for the component values given;
= 333.3 rad/s, which is the bridge frequency [2]

(c) From equation 3, substituting given values we have:

1, and

Since we have , the bridge is balanced for the given component values. [1]
