Draft A (2013-02-27)
Compared with Issue 01 (2012-04-28) of GBSS14.0, Draft A (2013-02-27) of GBSS15.0
includes the following changes.
2 Overview
2.1 Introduction
Ater Compression Transmission is a technology in which the TransCoder Subrack (TCS) of a
BSC is configured remotely on the MSC side and the Ater interface uses IP over PPP over
Ch-STM-1 transmission to carry speech signals. Meanwhile, the techniques such as Ater
multiplexing, PPP multiplexing, and IP header compression are used for data compression on
the Ater interface to increase the transmission efficiency on the Ater interface.
Ater Compression Transmission has the following characteristics:
l Remote location of the TCS decreases the transmission bandwidth usage by 75%. After
the Ater Compression Transmission feature is enabled, the transmission bandwidth usage
on the Ater interface additionally decreases by 30%.
l IP over PPP enables IP packets to be transmitted over the traditional TDM network. This
protects the legacy investment of the operator who owns the TDM transmission
resources.
l If the Abis interface uses the IP/High-Level Data Link Control (HDLC) transmission, no
coding or decoding boards are required to convert the transcoder and adapter unit
(TRAU) speech frames to packets. This saves the board configuration costs.

3 Technical Description
3.1 Overview
The TRAU frames are used to carry speech signals in a TDM network. Packet TRAU
(pTRAU) frames are used to carry signals in IP/HDLC transmission mode.
When the Ater Compression Transmission feature is enabled, the Ater interface uses IP over
PPP transmission to carry speech signals whereas it still use TDM transmission to carry radio
signaling links (RSLs) and operation and maintenance links (OMLs).
To enable Ater Compression Transmission, set ATERTRANSMODE to IP(IP).
In Ater compression transmission mode, the MPS/EPS and TCS of a BSC are adjacent nodes
to each other.
You need to configure the adjacent BSC of the TCS by setting NODET to BSC(Ater
Interface on BSC) and BSCID to 0. Meanwhile, configure the adjacent TCS of the BSC by
setting NODET to TC(Ater Interface on TC).
Figure 3-2 Network topology in TC pool mode (IP over PPP on the Ater user plane)
Figure 3-3 shows the network topology when both TDM and IP over PPP are used on the
user plane of the Ater interface.
Figure 3-3 Network topology in TC pool mode (TDM and IP over PPP on the Ater user
plane)
In TC pool networking mode, the MPS/EPS (regarded as the BSC) and TCS that support Ater
compression transmission are adjacent nodes.
You need to configure all the BSCs in the TC pool as the adjacent nodes of the TCS by setting
NODET of each BSC to BSC(Ater Interface on BSC), setting BSCID of the primary BSC to
0, and setting BSCID of every secondary BSC to a non-zero value. Meanwhile, configure the
adjacent TCS of each BSC by setting NODET to TC(Ater Interface on TC).
In Ater compression transmission mode, speech frames can be processed in the following
ways:
l Direct transmission of pTRAU frames from the Abis interface board to the Ater interface
board
When the Abis interface uses HDLC or IP transmission, the pTRAU frames are directly
sent from the Abis interface board to the Ater interface board without further processing
by the DPUc board. This reduces the delay of frame processing. Figure 3-5 shows the
signal flow.
l Frame format conversion between the Abis interface board and the Ater interface board
When the Abis interface uses TDM transmission, the DPUc board in the MPS/EPS
performs conversion between TRAU frames on the Abis interface and pTRAU frames on
the Ater interface. In addition, the DPUc board can eliminate the delay variation caused
by arrival of pTRAU frames when IP/HDLC transmission is used on the Ater interface.
Figure 3-6 shows the signal flow.
l Frame format conversion between the Ater interface board and the A interface board
In Ater compression transmission mode, the Ater interface board sends pTRAU frames
to the DPUc board for converting the pTRAU frames to PCM frames used on the A
interface. In addition, the DPUc board can eliminate the delay variation caused by arrival
of pTRAU frames when IP/HDLC transmission is used on the Ater interface, support the
downlink DTX function, and compress the silence frames. This improves the
transmission efficiency on the Ater interface. Figure 3-7 shows the signal flow.
Packet multiplexing can greatly improve the transmission efficiency in Ater compression
transmission mode when the timeslot resources are limited.
For details about packet multiplexing, see IP Transmission Efficiency Improvement Feature
Parameter Description.
3.3.3 Reliability
Ater Compression Transmission can improve transmission resource utilization. However, due
to the inherent characteristics of IP transmission, more bit errors, delay, and variation are
generated. In addition, IP transmission has more protocol layers than TDM transmission.
Therefore, higher reliability is required.
Ater Compression Transmission provides high reliability at the physical layer and the data
link layer.
l At the physical layer, the active/standby board or port switchover is performed without
disrupting services in the case of a board fault or optical port fault.
l At the data link layer, the MLPPP (Multilink PPP) group is configured to achieve PPP
link redundancy.
For details about packet multiplexing, see IP Transmission Efficiency Improvement Feature
Parameter Description.
In the case of a TC fault, the TC pool function can be enabled to rectify the fault.

5.1.2 Activation
Using MML Commands
On the BSC LMT, perform the following steps:
1. Run the ADD BRD command twice to add POUc boards for the BM subrack and TCS.
2. Run the SET BSCBASIC command with Service mode set to SEPARATE(Separate)
and Ater Interface Transfer Mode set to IP(IP).
3. Run the ADD ATERCONPATH command to add an Ater connection path between the
MPS and TCS.
4. Run the ADD ATEROML command to add an operation and maintenance link (OML)
between the MPS and TCS.
5. Run the ADD ATERSL command to add an Ater signaling link between the MPS/EPS
and TCS.
6. Configure the physical layer and data link layer data for the POUc board. For details, see
BSC6900 GSM Initial Configuration Guide.
7. Run the ADD ADJNODE command to add adjacent nodes on the BM side. In this step,
set Adjacent Node Type to BSC(Ater Interface on BSC).
8. Run the ADD ADJNODE command to add adjacent nodes on the TC side. In this step,
set Adjacent Node Type to TC(Ater Interface on TC).
9. Run the ADD IPPATH command twice to add an IP path for each of BM and TC. To
add multiple IP paths, run this command for each IP path.
2. On the BSC LMT, run the PING IP command with its parameters set as follows: Set
Source IP address to Local IP address specified in the DSP PPPLNK command. Set
Destination IP address to Peer IP address specified in the DSP PPPLNK command.
Expected result: The PING IP command output shows that the link is in normal state.
l When the physical layer link is configured as a multipoint link:
1. On the BSC LMT, run the DSP MPGRP command to query the values of Link state,
Local IP address, and peer IP address.
2. On the BSC LMT, run the DSP MPLNK command to query the values of Link state
and LCP negotiated state.
3. On the BSC LMT, run the PING IP command with its parameters set as follows: Set
Source IP address to Local IP address specified in the DSP MPGRP command. Set
Destination IP address to Peer IP address specified in the DSP MPGRP command.
Expected result: The PING IP command output shows that the link is in normal state.
Step 3 On the BSC LMT, run the DSP LAPDLNK command to check whether the LAPD link is in
normal state.
Expected result: The value of Usage status is NORMAL. This indicates that the LAPD link
works properly.
Step 4 On the BSC LMT, run the DSP ADJNODE command to check the adjacent node status,
number of paths to the adjacent node, and available bandwidth.
Expected result: The value of Operation state is Available, the related bandwidth is higher
than 0, and the adjacent node is in normal state.
