Dear Linda,
Today, I’ll write to you about my school. And the least I can say is that I feel
quite happy and comfortable in it.
First, let me mention its old stone building, surrounded by a nice flower
garden. The flowers are carefully arranged, and in spring, they give off a nice
scent when we head for the classes through the garden. Further back, there are
two large courtyards with enough space and benches to play or relax. There are
also big, ancient olive trees near the walls, where birds perch and nest. We can
hear them warble and chirp all year round.
Let me also describe my classroom. It is large and well decorated, with old-
fashioned brown desks, and posters and pictures all over the walls. And then,
there are those cabinets full of books which smell of old paper. Actually, I like
borrowing a book from to time and dream of all the adventures and mysteries I
read about.
I’ll finally say a few words about my teachers. I’m lucky to have such good
and considerate people around me. They are so keen to see the students do well.
They are always prepared to answer our questions, and they really want to make
sure we understand the hard parts of the lessons and exercises. I like the way
teachers get us involved. They surely have children of their own at school, which
explains why they understand how we feel.
So if there is one good reason why I like my school, it surely is because the
teaching staff are so caring, and so friendly. I can’t dream of a better school!

Introduction
Examinations have an important role to play in any system of education. Indeed, it is impossible to
imagine a school which does not set exams for students to measure their progress and to evaluate their
qualifications. However, if exams are necessary, they sometimes put students under pressure and can cause
stress-related conditions. One major factor/consequence of stress …

A. Comprehension
Ethics in business is the set of moral values that the professionals of any field are expected to respect
when they deal either with each other or with the public .In business , ethics represents the attitudes that
individuals and firms should comply with in the actions they perform and the decisions they take at every
level of their realisations. Such a philosophy does not exist every where because it needs the existence of
important conditions to apply it.
In societies where both political and cultural conditions exist for making every one obey this practice ,
the main principles that those engaged in the economic branches should follow involve a good number of
the qualities that have always served as the basis for civilisation. Among them we find the obligation to be
honest and lawful in one’s activities. It is also essential to act in conformity with the spirit of fair
competition which imposes the acceptance of new comers in one’s sphere and forbids the recourse to the
use of monopolisation not only in the spheres of manufacturing and selling goods but also as regards the
services which are provided to the community.
Next to these aspects , ethics requires from various members and groups of economic sectors the
payment of one’s taxes to the state and the necessity to treat one’s employees with fairness either in the
question of salaries or in matters related to the various social benefits they have the right to such as
insurance policies , retirement pensions and the protection from professional accidents.

Read the text carefully then do the activities:

Carol Kendall, from the Daily News, has written this report after having questioned 100 teenagers
about their leisure activities to know what do young people in Britain do in their leisure time.
In Britain , young people have a lot of hobbies they practise in their free time. These activities are
sporting and non-sporting activities.
Among the non-sporting activities, all adolescents said that they loved watching T.V. When I asked
them which programmes they preferred best, most of them replied they enjoyed listening to music.
When asked if they used the internet, many of them answered that they spent a lot of time
chatting with friends, playing video games and watching videos. Some of them said they liked going to
concert or the theatre, and others told me they enjoyed eating in a fast-food restaurant. I, then ,wanted to
know if they liked reading and only a few of them replied they did.
As to the sporting activities, boys are more sporty than girls. Of course, football is the most
popular sport among boys. Both boys and girls said they did a lot of cycling. Forty two boys and thirty six
girls said they liked going to the swimming pool. When I asked them what other sports they practised, they
replied tennis and basket-ball. Only 6% of the boys added that they practised boxing. None of the girls is

Nutrition
Nutrition is the science that deals with food and how the body uses it. People, like all living things,
need food to live. Food supplies the energy for every action we perform, from reading a book to running a
race. Food also provides substances that the body needs to build and repair its tissues and to regulate its
organs and systems.
What we eat directly affects our health. A proper diet helps prevent certain illnesses and aids in
recovery from others. An improper or inadequate diet increases the risk of various diseases. Eating a
balanced diet is the best way to ensure that the body receives all the food substances it needs. Nutrition
experts recommend that the daily diet include a certain number of servings from each of the five major
food groups: (1) breads, cereals, rice, and pasta, (2) vegetables, (3) fruits, (4) milk, yogurt, and cheese, and
(5) meat, poultry, fish, dried beans and peas, eggs, and nuts. Fats are also essential, but, like sweets, should
be eaten in small quantities.
Workers in the field of nutrition oversee school food services, plan menus for hospitalized patients, and
provide nutrition counselling for individuals. They administer international food programs and investigate
the relationship between diet and health. They seek improved ways of processing, packaging, and
distributing foods, and they create new foods.

South India Girl Child Initiative
The South India Girl Child Initiative seeks to expand existing efforts of four local NGOs that
ameliorate the social, environmental, and economic conditions that impede girls' education and decrease
girls' vulnerability to sexual exploitation and abusive forms of child labor in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil
Nadu States. The end goals of the Initiative are to improve the educational and health status of adolescent
girls from poor and more conservative communities, and to help adolescent girls transition into primary
school or training to increase their life options and decrease their risk of being trafficked or entering into
other forms of child labor.
Through the Initiative, the four partner NGOs, who interact with at least 16 other small local NGOs,
community-based groups, and family foundations and trusts in the region, will work individually and
collectively on: Improving the quality and effectiveness of their educational and social development
programs for girls;developing and testing strategies to engage parents, community leaders, schools, and
government officials to support, promote and advocate for girls' education; and, contributing to the
development of relevant educational and social policy that is informed and shaped by the needs and realities
of girls themselves.
Each year, the three-year South Indian Girl Child Initiative aims to increase life options through
secondary services over the course of the project. Secondary beneficiaries will include about 100 Indian
NGO staff, field workers and teachers. The project will strengthen community participation and support for
girls' education in general, and address the social, educational, economic, and cultural beliefs and practices
that diminish the value of girls' education and promote abusive child labor practices, including sexual
exploitation of children. It will also develop a model for collaboration and network-building by grassroots
organizations that will drive systemic change and can be replicated in other parts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra
Pradesh.

Text:
Researchers have found that most drivers think they are better than others behind the wheel. The
team interviewed 400 motorists of all ages. They all had to answer questions about what they thought of
their own driving skills and how they react in different driving conditions, including terrible weather and
congested roads. §1
The results were very similar across all age ranges – the majority of the people interviewed believed
their driving skills were better than those of other drivers. Older drivers, for example, were more confident
in their abilities than younger ones. §2
The leader of the research, Dr James Gagnon, believes the attitudes found in the survey could be
dangerous. Mr Gagnon said that confidence can be a good thing, but it often has dangerous consequences.
He stated, “If you think that you are a better driver, you start behaving differently behind the wheel and do
not pay as much attention as you should. This might explain why young men tend to have more accidents
on the roads than other drivers”. It is time for governments to take things more seriously. Traffic accidents
are a huge killer throughout the world. Few drivers really think about how deadly their cars can be in
accidents. More severe regulations are needed as people are killed every day on the roads.§3

One of the great impacts of advertisements on consumers is over consumption. This latter, actually,
can turn into a bad behaviour and cause many problems. People who "shop till they drop" and run their
credit cards up to the limit are often considered as shopping addicted. Despite that compulsive shopping
and spending makes a person feel worse, shopaholics believe that if they shop, they will feel better.
Compulsive shopping or spending can be a seasonal balm, especially in special occasions. Shopaholics
spend most of their time shopping in supermarkets and malls, buying products they don't really need,
partly because they feel attracted by the image of the product, and the want to get it is bigger than the
amount of money they will spend.
Shopaholics when they feel out of sort, shop for a "pick me up". They go out and buy, to get a "rush"
just like a drug or alcohol addict. This behaviour, generally is due to depression, loneliness and anxiety. In
some cases shopaholics have an emotional "black out". If their family or friends begin to complain about
their purchases, they will often hide the things they buy. Since they cannot pay their bills and credit suffers,
they have collection agencies attempting to get what is owed, or may have legal, social and relationship
problems. They sometimes take an extra job to pay for bills.
Therefore, shopping and spending does not assure more love and self-esteem or heal the hurts,
regrets and problems of daily living, it rather makes these feelings worse because of increased financial
debt obtained from compulsive shopping.

Teenagers have become top consumerism today’s society, so advertisers have focused on getting
their business. Why are teens being targeted? Because they are keen on being fashionable, and their
number is expected to grow in the next decades. Winning teens over as consumers, today, means possible
long term consumers. Most of teens have- part time jobs or some type of income. They are able to spend
their money more freely because they do not have the responsibilities of adults. Thus teenagers are
becoming big targets for advertisers due to their growing consumption.
Why are they such big targets? The answer is simple: they are different. Advertisers view them as a
constant changing generation with optimistic outlooks. They want to show individuality by their clothes
and possessions. They like to feel good about themselves, so they buy new materials to produce that
feeling. They are continuously purchasing new items to keep up with the changing trends, therefore,
advertisers use their view of teens to create ads; they use original, flashy, and funny ads to reach the
teenage audience. Television commercials include music with good beats and bizarre images because that
is what attracts the attention of teens. Advertisers use celebrities to endorse products because teens
admire them. Since teens are still trying to find themselves, advertisers try to create ads and brands that
will survive past the years of teenagers, so they will have them as future consumers.

The Moon is an earth satellite orbiting our planet from a distance of 384,000kms on average, and its
orbit is in a west-to-east direction. Its surface gravity is only 0.16 that of the Earth (one sixth), and it does
not seem to have life on it, since it has neither atmosphere nor water. Minimum and maximum temperatures
on it are wide apart, with +110˚C on the sunlit side and –170˚C in lunar nights. The geology of this satellite
is rock only, and its age is about 4,6 billion years.
Plans to reach the Moon on space crafts have been on scientists’ minds since early 20th century. But
they became more concrete when the Russians launched space crafts Sputnik 1 and Sputnik 2 in 1957, the
second one carrying dog Laika. In 1961, Yuri Gagarin orbited the Earth, followed by the American astronaut
John Glenn in 1962. Finally, America won the honour of reaching the Moon before Russia, when Neil
Armstrong set foot on it on July 21st 1969.
There are at present plans to build a space base on the Moon, to set a giant telescope and launch space
ships from there to distant planets, and perhaps to other solar systems.

Read the text carefully then do the activities.
Do you want to be a better reader? Turn off the television! A recent study found that kids younger than 6
spend about two hours a day watching TV, playing video games, or using computers. Is that the same about
the amount of time they spend with a book! The study which was released on Tuesday included more than
1,000 parents of kids between the ages of 6 months and 6 years.
Spending a lot of time on the computer, watching TV or playing video games can make it hard to get
better at reading. Kids who live in homes where the TV is on “most of the time” are less likely to be able to
read by age 6.
Reading is still popular, though. Almost 80 percent of kids under 6 are exposed to books. In fact
researchers say kids spend an average of 49 minutes a day with a book. And what is the average amount of
time spent in front of the TV or computer? About 2 hours and 22 minutes!
Victoria Rideout, a researcher for the study, said kids who watch TV, use computers, and play video
games will have an advantage in their lives. She says media can help their learning, but there are
disadvantages, too.
Dr. Henry Shapiro studies kids’ development and behavior. He says; ʺ reading, playing with toys, and
talking with others is much better for kids’ learning than watching TVʺ. He also says there is a good side of
TV, computers and video games. “Kids are home, safe, they are learning things.”

Second Term Test Correction
Part one: Reading
A/ Comprehension
