The document discusses the structure and characteristics of population. It defines population as the number of people in an area or group. A census systematically records information about a population, including age, sex, employment status, religion, and ethnicity. Demography is the study of populations, using tools like population pyramids to illustrate characteristics. Population pyramids can be triangular, rectangular, or hourglass shaped depending on factors like birth rates, life expectancy, and population growth trends in a country. Developing countries typically have triangular pyramids while developed countries range from rectangular to hourglass shapes. Students are assigned to create a population census for their own household to collect key demographic data.

STRUCTURE AND CHARACTERISTICS OF POPULATION

 The structure of a population includes its size, age distribution and sex/gender distribution.

 A census is the procedure of systematically acquiring and recording information about the
members of a given population. The type of information recorded on a census are normally: age, sex,
employment status, religion, ethnicity/race

 Demography is the study of population where a population pyramid is used to illustrate the
structure of a population.

 Types of population pyramids.

- Triangular with a narrow top and wide bottom
- Rectangular and
- Wide top and narrow bottom

 A triangular-shaped population pyramid with a wide bottom and narrow top shows a population
with many younger people and few older ones. This represents a high birth rate, short life expectancy
and rapid population growth and is typical of developing countries. See example of Grenada's
population pyramid for 2018.

 A rectangular-shaped population pyramid shows a low birth rate, low infant mortality, long life
expectancy, and slow to zero population growth, and is typical of some developed countries. Developed
countries for example, the USA, Canada and Britain.
See example of Canada's 2018 population pyramid.

 A population pyramid with a wider top or middle and narrow bottom shows low birth rate, long
life expectancy, an ageing population and a decreasing population, as in some developed countries. See
example below of Japan's 2018 population pyramid
