ABSTRACT
Power generation in the world is new trend at the some we have to maintain the stability
is other resource to increase the efficiency. Worldwide fast depletion of conventional energy
resources necessitates the implementation of renewable energy sources for generation to satisfy
the growing demand. Due to growing power demand and increasing concern about the
environmental pollution caused by fossil fuelled-power plants, the distributed generation concept
is gaining greater commercial and technical importance all over the world. Distributed
generation encompasses the interconnection of small-scale, on-site DGs with the main utility
grid at distribution voltage level. DGs constitute non-conventional and renewable energy sources
like solar PV, wind turbines, fuel cells, mini/micro hydro, tidal and wave generators and micro
turbines. These technologies are being preferred for their high energy efficiency (micro turbine
or fuel cell-based CHP systems), low environmental impact (PV, wind, hydro, etc.) and their
applicability as uninterruptible power supplies to PQ (power quality) sensitive loads. Electricity
market reforms and advancements in electronics/communication technology are currently
enabling the improved control of geographically distributed DGs through advanced SCADA
(supervisory control and data acquisition).
Surveys indicate that in spite of increasing DG penetration, power engineers, network
operators, regulators and other stakeholders are hesitant regarding incorporation of DGs into
existing system and their independent operation which is needed due to various technical impacts
of DG penetration on the existing utility. Increasing penetration of distributed generation (DG)
power plants into distribution networks (DNs) causes various issues concerning, e.g., stability,
protection equipment, and voltage regulation. The mode of operation is also necessary for
utilizing full DG potential for generation augmentation, for enhancing power quality (PQ) and
reliability and for providing auxiliary services such as active reserve, load-following, critical
loads, reactive reserve and restoration.
Most of the DG’s involves power generation using wind power is received considerable
attention worldwide. Induction machines are mostly used as generators in wind power based
generations. Since induction machines have a stability problem as they draw very large reactive
currents during fault condition. The recent concerns over the case of large share of wind power
generation, which results in reducing the total inertia of the synchronous generators and
degrading the system transient stability. One of the major problems of voltage stability is the
reactive power limit of the system. Improving of reactive power compensation, system's reactive
power handling capacity and power quality via Flexible AC transmission System (FACTS)
devices is a solution for prevention of voltage instability.
Technological innovations, changing economic and regulatory environment is resulted
considerable revival of interest in connecting wind generation to the grid. Utilities that are
seeking to understand possible impacts on system operations when a large amount of wind power
is introduced into the electric power system. Producers of renewable energy are to condition the
power produced in order to interconnect with the power grid but not to interface with the grid’s
overall performance. In these aspects Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) Technology
plays a vital role in enhancing the power system performance and to improve the Power Quality
of the System.
The aspects of voltage stability related to voltage control and reactive power support in
an active distribution grid are analyzed, by considering both static and dynamic system
constraints. The analysis is carried out based on different international and local utility standards
for FACTS devices. The ability of FACTS devices is to provide reactive power support and to
explore in a structural way, to improve its voltage stability as well as power quality. The analysis
concentrates on power quality issues when wind power integrates with grid and the solution with
the usage of any of the FACTS devices. The Scope of work is carried out by using
MATLAB/SIMULINK simulation for the analysis and improvement of voltage profile, steady
state and transient stability.
