RE: Support for Mrs. Shari Mohan’s Tenure

Dear Mrs. Teutschman:

We understand that Mrs. Mohan is currently being considered for tenure. We hope you consider
our unqualified support for her tenure in making your decision. Our son, Michael, has had the
great fortune to have Mrs. Mohan as his teacher for both first grade and second grade, and her
thoughtfulness, compassion, and hard work has benefitted Michael (and I am sure all of her
students) immensely, especially during this unprecedented time brought on by the COVID-19
pandemic.

We have had the benefit of engaging with you over the last few years with our concerns and also
expressing our gratitude for your help as we, collectively, work to ensure Michael is provided
with a stellar education. As you know, we have communicated to you on a few occasions our
appreciation of Mrs. Mohan and have let you know the amazing work she has done and
continues to do. If anything, our appreciation has continued to grow. While we could write
multiple volumes on her excellent work, here are a few examples.

First, Mrs. Mohan presents herself as a calming persona, always starting the day with a smile.
We do not know the amount of work and stress she faces everyday (which we have to believe is
daunting), but that is because her sole focus starting at 8:40 is teaching the kids and doing so in a
fun and engaging way. Michael enjoys the class time, and we have noticed that his participation
has increased and improved since the start of remote learning last March.

Second, Mrs. Mohan continues to impress us with her incorporation of technology in the
curriculum, which has made the transition to full-time remote learning much, much smoother.
The first couple of weeks this year were somewhat chaotic, and we were met with fairly frequent
shuffling of teachers. However, when we heard Mrs. Mohan was going to be Michael’s teacher
again, we were overjoyed. When she posted her bitmoji classroom and video explaining how to
navigate the pages, we were amazed. The virtual classroom was well organized, resourceful, and
fun. It also mirrored her vibrant personality. In addition, she has found ways to utilize various
online tools to facilitate and enhance the student’s learning. For example, she has students post
their homework via FlipGrid, an online video platform, similar to TikTok. Also, her online
classroom is well-organized, with current assignments easy to find. Mrs. Mohan clearly puts a lot
of work in preparing her classes.

Third, Mrs. Mohan does an excellent job encouraging parent engagement in the classroom and is
always open to ideas from parents. For example, last year when Michael was in first grade,
Antara brought to her the idea of having a Diwali event, and she enthusiastically supported the
idea. Antara was invited to read a story about Diwali, and the kids worked on crafts and created a
simple dessert. Mrs. Mohan has put on this special presentation for two years. Mrs. Mohan also
encourages parents of other cultures to send her ideas about future presentations.

Finally, Mrs. Mohan is always available and listens very well to our concerns. She is very
compassionate about issues with special education kids and never makes any parent feel like
their concerns are not being heard. She has always been very supportive of Michael and makes
him (and all of his classmates) feel like a superstar.

We hope the above demonstrates that Mrs. Mohan is a star teacher, and we hope you seriously
consider her for tenure.

Thank you for your time and for your hard work these past several months. We are proud to be
parents of a PS175 student.

Kind regards,

Antara Kanth James Smith
