Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title:
The four seasons
Objectives:
Students will be able to analyze and interpret data from observations and measurements to describe
local weather conditions (including temperature, wind, and forms of precipitation).

Students will be able to discuss information about severe weather conditions to explain why certain
safety precautions are necessary.

State Standards:

2.E.2: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the daily and seasonal weather patterns.

2.E.2A. Conceptual Understanding: Weather is the combination of sunlight, wind, precipitation

(rain, sleet, snow, and hail), and temperature in a particular region at a particular time. Scientists
measure and record these conditions to describe the weather and to identify patterns over time.
Weather scientists (meteorologists) forecast severe weather so that communities can prepare for
and respond to these events.

Context: I decided to teach this particular lesson so that students can understand what types of
weather to expect during a season and when there is severe weather, what kind of safety
precautions students need to take weather at home or in school. Since this lesson is the second
step of the unit as a whole, the standard that comes before is using science and engineering
techniques to understand the science concept. Students will bring their knowledge of using
observations and data that was collected to determine the weather. The next lesson topic is
properties of solids and liquids. With that being said, teaching students the difference between
solids and liquids like rain and hail being forms of precipitation would be included.
Data: Students will be grouped based on the amount of knowledge understood and obtained by
these students from the previous class. They will be grouped into two different groups, ones who
had trouble and the others will be those who did not have trouble understanding so I can focus on
those who need more help for this lesson. The data that these groups will be based on will be
from a kahoot that was taken at the end of last class. For future groups and lessons, the data that
will be collect is an exit ticket which will be taken at the end of class and is the only way the
students will be able to leave the classroom and go to their next class.

Procedures:
Introduction (10 minutes): Students will come into the classroom from the class before. They
will sit down and get situated with their belongings so they are focused and ready to learn in my class.
After doing so, students will read the board that instructs them to get out their designated books that
will be needed for class today, when the room is quiet, I will begin my lesson. I will start by going back
over the information taught in the previous class and then go on by showing them a BrainPop video on
the smartboard about the four seasons which is what topic we will be going over today and how the
rotational activities will work.

Teacher Directed (10 minutes):

During this small group, students will answer a few questions about the weather in their google
classroom page so they will have a better understanding before moving on. These questions will consist
of “What is sunlight?”, What is wind and what does it do?”, “What are the different types of
participation?” After going through answering these questions, I will then review the answers to the
students and have a discussion about what we just went over. Hopefully this will give me the
assumptions I need, meaning if students fully understood the information and if we need to evaluate
more on the topic.

Collaborative (10 minutes): During this group, I will hand out graphic organizers to students
which are charted out with the word’s “sun”, “wind”, “rain” “snow” then a variety of stickers that can go
underneath each of the words. Students will then, draw on the app called DrawingApp on what you are
supposed to do when certain kinds of weather apply. For instance, if it snows, “do not drive”, if there is
a hurricane, “sit in the house” When finished, students will place everything back to its place so it is
ready for the next group to come around.

Independent Digital (10 minutes): The last section, students will get into groups of 3-4 and watch
these two videos

3) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZyT_Aiey1U
4) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVZExLO0MWA
about the topic “Weather”. These videos will be a part of their page in their Google Classroom so it is
easy to access for all. Only one of the three or four students will log into Google Classroom. Afterwards,
they will work separate and answer questions on their own tablets about the information in the videos.
They will be separated for this part because it is supposed to be independent digital and this will allow
students to think on their own so that they really know if they need more help or not before moving
onto the end of class.

Closure (10 minutes): Finally, students will make their way back to their designated seats. I
will review everything we just went over and make sure all my students have a good understanding. I
will answer any questions that will also help my students understanding. We will have one last final
discussion and then move onto their exit ticket. This exit ticket will consist of multiple choice, written
questions and their enjoyment of this lesson. As they leave, they will pick up anything that needs to be
taken home and go on with their day.

Rationale:
Multimedia 1: BrainPop: This app/website (It is both) is a great learning tool for any
educational topic/subject. I really enjoyed this site as a student back when I was in middle
and high school so I would like to pass it onto my students. This app supports my
students learning and their standards because it can educate them with videos, test their
knowledge and give them fun things to do whether it is a worksheet or a game. This will
help students understand the standards that need to be learned a lot better and easier. This
multimedia can be used to differentiate instruction for all learns because you can break
movies into chunks and this helps students who take a little longer to get the hang of the
lesson focus on one section at a time.
Multimedia 2: The video called “What is Weather?” is very visual and is focused
specifically for kids so it will help my students in the 2nd grade understand better than
many other videos. This video supports my standards because the standard that should be
covered is focused on the seasonal patterns which usually consists of all different kinds of
weather. With it focusing on all kinds of weather, this movie will educate students on the
different kinds of weather so when it comes to talking about seasons, they will know
where which belongs where. For those who are visual learners and those who are not both
will benefit. Those who are visual learners will see that in this video, it is all about
pictures, drawings and obviously talking.
