Downs, Frederick. The Killing Zone: My Life in the Vietnam War. New York: W.N. Norton &
Company, Inc., 1978. Print.

I came away with a greater appreciation of what the war was like as a soldier. Downs
faced the most deadly and despicable dangers, following orders the whole time, keeping
his men as safe as he could, and hoping that the war was worth the sacrifice.

Jacobs, Norman, et al. “Vietnam; vital issues in the great debate.” The Foreign Policy
Association. LC Control No.: 66029508 (1966): 1 – 17. Print.

This journal discussed many important matters such as moral, legal and strategic issues.
It explained the Geneva Agreement and addressed what type of war we were fighting. It
also gave details on the impact of allies and rivals and a solution to end the war.

Kohler, Dean Ellis, and Susan Vanhecke. Rock ‘n’ Roll Soldier: A Memoir. New York, New
York: Harper Teen, 2009. Print.

This book shows the way that soldiers could “get away” from the troubles of the war. A
soldier is asked by his captain to put together a rock band, and him and 3 comrades play
for the others, letting them relax and have fun, when they are not in battle.

Milam, Ron. Not a Gentleman’s War: An Inside View of Junior Officers in the Vietnam War.
Chapel Hill, North Carolina: The University of North Carolina Press, 2009. Print.

This book has documented facts and brought logic and sense to these issues. It also
provided a vivid view of what the platoon leader had to face, such as training his men,
and keeping racial tension at ease.

Nhut, Tran Van and Christian L. Arevian. A Loc: The Unfinished War. Lubbock, Texas: Texas
Tech University Press, 2009. Print.

This book was written by a South Vietnamese General that fought in alongside the
Americas during the war. In this story he tells us some of the South Vietnam’s challenges
in establishing and accepting a democratic form of government. It also shows how they
desperately wanted to live in a democratic republic with a free-market economy.

Tonsetic, Robert. Forsaken Warriors: The Story of an American Advisor who Fought with the
South Vietnamese Rangers and Airborne. Havertown, Pennsylvania: Casemate, 2009.
Print.

The author of this book served as a US Army advisor to South Vietnamese Ranger and
Airborne units during the war. He gives several first hand accounts on working with
South Vietnamese which started several campaigns in South Vietnam, Cambodia, and
Laos. It also explains the duties of the US advisory teams.

This documentary features live footage from Detroit immigrants of various ethnic
backgrounds who proudly served in the Vietnam War. The producer wanted these true
accounts told by the veterans that helped pave the way for the future generations. Also,
he advised that he wanted to pay tribute to the elders and immigrants of Detroit who were
treated so poorly upon their return from the war to the United States.

This website assisted me with seeing real pictures of the men who fought in Vietnam, the
machines and weapons they used, and the citizens from Vietnam that they fought for and
protected. These pictures are unbelievable, the way they show some of the incredible
conditions under which soldiers from both sides lived, fought, and ultimately died. I was
unable to use any pictures from this website since the images used on this site are strictly
protected by copyright laws. I attempted to contact the photographer, Mr. Tim Page, UPI,
Bettman Archives and Corbis and get his permission to use some of the pictures, but I
never received an answer from him.

Anderson and John Ernst examined Vietnamese as well as American experiences of the

This book gave me the perspective of a man, George Ball, who was the undersecretary of
state under President Kennedy, and it showed that the debate was even in the White
House between the people that worked for the President and the President himself.

Levine, Robert A. The Arms Debate and the Third World: Have we learned from Vietnam? Santa
Monica, California: The Rand Corporation, 1987. Print.

This book gives example of key issues during four different time periods.
1.) Pre-Vietnam, 2.) During the war, 3.) After the war, 4.) Present Day. The author
identifies the two major changes in America views on the Third World Policy.

Levy, David W. The Debate Over Vietnam. Baltimore, Maryland and London: The John Hopkins
University Press, 1995. Print.

Levy begins with a brief history of Vietnam under foreign rule and recounts the growing
American military presence, and the increasing reaction it provoked. He explores the
fundamental values and assumptions of Americans on both sides of the growing debate,
contrasting Republic consensus with Democratic division.

Moore, John Norton. The Vietnam Debate: A Fresh Look at the Arguments. Lanham, Maryland
and London: University Press of America, 1990. Print.

This book gives perceptions about the Vietnam War. This volume brings together some
of the USA’s experts on the Vietnam War to review the principal arguments. The
cumulative impact is striking in persuasively demonstrating how so many of the
popularly accepted arguments were pure myth.
