Alopecia

By:Allyson Hanlon Oviatt

What is Alopecia??
Alopecia is an autoimmune condition that
causes the hair to fall out! It is developed
because the immune system will fight the
hair follicles and causes the hair to fall
out. There are multiple types of Alopecia.
On the next slides, I will go into a bit of
detail on each one.
Alopecia Areata
Alopecia Areata is the main type of Alopecia. This is
where a person will have bald patches the size of a
quarter on their head. Alopecia Areata is a polygenic
disease, meaning that both parents both have a
specific genes in order for their offspring. It affects
6.8 million people in the US. Most cases are in people
who are under 30 years old. Alopecia Areata can be
the cause of other types of Alopecia
Alopecia Totalis and Alopecia Universalis
Alopecia Totalis is different from Alopecia Areata.
Alopecia Totalis is the loss of hair on the scalp
resulting in baldness. There are cures for Alopecia
Totalis. .Alopecia Universalis is total baldness of the
body. It is the most severe case of Alopecia. There is
absolutely no hair on the body. Eyebrows, eyelashes,
leg, pubic, and underarm hair simply does not grow.
However it is not permanent but there is no cure for
it so far.
Other types of Alopecia
★ Persistent Patchy Alopecia Areata
○ This is the type of Alopecia that doesn’t evolve into Alopecia Totalis
or Universalis.
★ Diffuse Alopecia Areata
○ Diffuse Alopecia is the thinning of the hair on the scalp that is
unexpected. It is very hard to diagnose due to other conditions that
have symptoms of hair loss or hair loss conditions.
★ Ophiasis Alopecia
○ Ophiasis Alopecia is the loss of hair on the sides and lower back of
the scalp. It is hard to treat due to the medication. It takes a while
for the medication to start working.
Diagnosis

There are many ways to get diagnosed with Alopecia. You can go
to your regular doctor and get diagnosed if the hair loss is visible
and by looking at the hair under a microscope, you can have a
biopsy to rule out other hair loss conditions. You can also get blood
tests to test for Alopecia and/or other autoimmune disorders!
Cures and Treatment

As of right now, there are no cures for Alopecia. There are

treatments that people with Alopecia can use to temporarily treat it.
Corticosteroids are a drug that suppresses the immune system so
that the immune system does not attack the cells. There are other
drugs that can be taken such as SADBE, Minoxidil, Anthralin, and
DPCP. Photochemotherapy is also an option and is a great
alternative for the medications.
