Social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are beneficial to students. Do
you agree?

It is rare that nowadays a student does not have a social networking account of any kind,

whether it is Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. Students, especially teenage and college students,

find these social networks indispensable. They depend on social networks and the Internet to

communicate, exchange information and express themselves. Undeniably, social networks

have changed students‟ lives and affected how they interact with one another and the world

around them. In my opinion, social networks are indeed beneficial to students as they provide

opportunities for the students to stay in contact, gain knowledge and be entertained.

First and foremost, social networks provide students with the opportunity to connect

with others, some of whom they may not have seen for ages. This is a good way to rekindle old

friendships or connect with loved ones who reside far-away. Family-orientated people can

keep in touch with family members regularly. Both parties can share important events in their

lives with each other. Befriending people from other countries is very likely to happen via

social networking. For example, one can make new friends through playing multiplayer games

like „Draw My Thing‟, „Quiz Planet‟ and „Tetris Battle‟ that can be found on Facebook game

list. They can send the other players a friend invitation so that they can play together at some

time in the future. In short, social networks can connect the whole world, making geographical

separation and physical boundaries insignificant and widening the friendship circle across the

continents of the world from Asia to North America.

Secondly, social networks can act as a stress reliever to the students. In fact, these social

media platforms are often regarded as helpful stress management tools and effective

entertainment tools. These platforms enable students to chit-chat with their friends online.

They can even share jokes, funny photos and internet memes with one another. It should be
able to cheer someone up when he is having a bad hair day. For instance, one would have such

a good laugh after watching funny videos on social media sites and it will improve his mood or

ease his tension and anxiety in life. Besides, students are allowed to upload songs, video clips

and even movies to their social media wall for their friends to access and review. Hence, social

networking is not only a way to kill boredom and fill leisure time, it is also a good, cheap way

to unwind and relax one‟s mind. Being on the social network platform can positively shut a

student‟s mind down and tune out the stress and pressures he experiences from school.

Furthermore, students can gain knowledge via these social networks, as they are great

vehicles for the dissemination of information. Students can share useful and educational

information among themselves. Most popular social networks come with a „share‟ button

which allows users to share interesting posts from other users. Students can follow their friends

to get the latest and greatest science facts, research and discoveries from sources their friends

have found useful. Other friends, in turn, may become curious about what others have been

reading and will click on the shared posts to find out more. Take for example, they may

become aware of what is happening around the world through reading the shared news and

information by their friends via social networks. This indirectly helps them to raise awareness

of the world issues and learn more about latest news update. In brief, social networking saves

on time and effort spent flipping through thick books or newspapers.

In conclusion, there is no doubt that social networks do a great job connecting people all

over the world, relieving students‟ stress and helping them to gain knowledge. However, one

has to pay the cost of losing his precious time if one uses social networks excessively as it has

the potential to ruin relationships with others as well as deteriorating health.
