DP2 TOK – 15 September Task Sheet

Chosen Title
1.  “Statistics conceal as much as they reveal.”

2. My Initial impression of the title and why I think I am interested

I feel that the title relates to the AOKs of Math, Human Sciences, and Natural
Sciences. However, as statistics is used in everyday life, the scope for investigating
the title broadens out to several other AOKs. I am interested in this title as I am
deeply interested in statistics, and feel that this title has the potential to be explored
in detail.
- “statistics conceal as much as they reveal.”
- In simple terms, the title reflects that statistics can be associated with
negative implications, along with positive implications

3. Implied knowledge claim that I found interesting

Statistics are often misused to conceal information

4. Three Questions to explore the implications of the claim from different
perspectives

- how are statistics misused? / how do we know when statistics are misused?
- Why are statistics misused? (personal benefit?)
