Topic: Trends and Issues Encountered in the New Normal

Speakers: Consuelo G. Tiongson, MT-II

Ferdinand F. Tenorio, MT-I

The teaching staff of Barasoain Memorial Integrated School together with their school head,
Mr. Reynaldo M. Diaz, organized an interactive SLAC session and Seminar-Workshop regarding
Trends and Issues in the New Normal on December 14, 2020, through virtual video conference. The
grade 2 and grade 7 teachers were in-charge of the day’s virtual seminar-workshop. Mrs. Lorentina
C. Eder served as the master of the ceremony that day.

The program started with prayer through a video presentation facilitated by the grade 2
teachers, followed by the singing of the National Anthem, Panunumpa sa Watawat, Panatang
Makabayan, Panunumpa ng mga Kawani sa Gobyerno, Deped III Hymn, Malolos March, and BMIS
Hymn. Mr. Reynaldo M. Diaz, Principal IV of BMIS, welcomed everyone warmly for the first day. He
also expressed his heartfelt gratitude for a surprise birthday celebration last December 12, 2020.

On the other hand, Dr. Benilda B. Agustin, PSDS of District 1, gave her inspirational message
to everyone. Mrs. Eder facilitated the roll call of attendees by calling each grade level and ask to utter
this line: “Sulong Edukalidad Para sa Bata, Para sa Bayan”. It was a lively way of checking the
attendance of each participant. Mr. Ferdinand Tenorio as the overall chairman of the LAC session
presented the seminar Matrix for the whole week. He also emphasized the different assignments
regarding the seminar-workshop.

To start the talk proper, Mrs. Consuelo G. Tiongson presented her talk on the trends and
issues encountered in the New Normal Education. She tackled the different issues encountered by
teachers and learners during this challenging school year 2020-2021. She started her discussion by
asking these three questions: 1.What is the main product of DepEd? 2. What is the overall goal of
DepEd? 3. What are the success indicators of the learner’s outcome? Different answers came out
from the teachers. A lot of ideas were generated which good enough to start the discussion. She
refreshed the minds of the teachers to extend their heart in understanding the situation of both the
parents and learners in this time of the pandemic. She also showed video clips of common mistakes
and errors derived from different modules in different areas.

At the end of her talk, Mrs. Tiongson emphasized the importance of improving the education
process by this message: “Quality is not something you install like a new carpet or a sheet of
bookshelves. You implant it. …It is a learning process”. After much thorough reflection that gathered
positive responses from the participants, Mrs. Tiongson asked the participants to come with their
output for the day. It was indeed a good experience of sharing ideas and wisdom to ponder on as
educators.

At 9:57 AM, the second resource speaker of the day, Mr. Ferdinand E. Tenorio, had introduced
the topic, “The Dangers of Social Media”. The presentation was successfully engaging as it started
with a brainstorming which utilizes a logo quiz. All teachers of the Barasoain Memorial Integrated
School were actively participating in identifying each logo used in various social media applications
such as Facebook, Gmail, Pinterest, and LinkedIn to name a few.
Mr. Tenorio discussed the dangers of social media covering the following crucial matters: the
negative impact of social media on academic performance, negative health consequences caused by
“hyper networking” (spending more than 3 hours on social media per day), increase feelings of envy,
the use of Facebook during working hours which compromises workers’ productivity by an average of
less than 1.5 percent, the risks of sharing the events of the users’ personal lives, cyberbullying which
affects the youth by approximately 42 percent, and hackers (individual who are trying to steal a
private or personal account on social media).

Moreover, the speaker also shared some advantageous advice from the experts on how to
stay safe while engaging in social media sites. These include the following: ensuring that the minors
are not sharing too many details online, knowing their followers personally, refraining from posting
about vacations, reminding your child that you love and support them, as well as the creation of
strong passwords which are a combination of numbers and characters.

Subsequently, the BMIS faculty was highly honored by the presence of our Education Program
Supervisor, Ms. Fatima M. Punongbayan who had also shared a very uplifting speech to everyone.

After the talk proper, the remaining time was utilized wisely by conducting an open forum
wherein the BMIS faculty had actively participated. Also, the distribution of work for the In-Service
Training Day 2 (December 15, 2020) was thoroughly discussed.

The program was indeed successful because of the utmost cooperation and participation of
the entire BMIS faculty and the leadership of the following authorities: Ms. Fatima M. Punongbayan
(Education Program Supervisor), Mr. Reynaldo M. Diaz (Principal IV, BMIS), Ms. Maria Jasmin F.
