PATIENT CARE CONFERENCE

INTRODUCTION

Education must begin with the student and must be adapted to the needs and
requirement of the student to make the student grow in his professional education. All
instruction should be carefully graded and arranged in the natural order. Progressive
method of teaching provides suitable opportunities for learning by doing, for
experimentation and for cooperation. Every teacher must devise his own good method
which helps in mutual interaction and understanding of the subject taught. Teaching
method is the stimulation, guidance, direction and encouragement for learning. One of
such clinical teaching method in nursing is Patient Care Conference, which is a small
group teaching method during the clinical experience period to provide excellent
opportunity for students to actively participate in the devising the nursing care of the
patient.

CONDUCTING PATIENT CARE CONFERENCE

 It is conducted for a small group involving 6-12 students.

 It focused on the nursing care of the patient with a particular disease condition.

 It can be conducted by a nurse educator, doctor or a ward sister.

 The name of the patient, other details and the venue should be informed to the
students prior to the conference.

 Selecting the patient with a disease condition of common interest, proper timing and
students’ participation make this teacher centered method to student oriented
method.

 The students should study the case sheet of the patient, review the related literature
and actively participate in the conference.

 There is no need for the presence of the patient during the conference.
 The patient care conference can be conducted at the clinical teaching room.

 Patient selected should have the typical signs and symptoms rather than unusual
confusing symptoms.

 The duration for the Patient Care Conference is 30-45 minutes.

 The learning experience is essentially discussion with a focus on the total care of the
patient, specific nursing care, observations and recorded data and their implications,
the patient’s response to the nursing care and his progress.

 The effect and the nature of nursing care is the key factor in the patient care
conference which include solving the patient care problems which may arise due to
the consequences of medical or surgical treatment.

 Condition of the patient, signs and symptoms, line of management and nursing care
are discussed.

 The teacher involves students, especially the student who is looking after the patient
in the discussion.

 After the discussion, the students’ doubts and questions regarding nursing care is
clarified and answered.

 Patient care conference ends up with a summary, recapitulation of important aspects


and feedback from the students.
SUMMARY

Patient care conference is one of the effective method of clinical teaching in which,
a small group of students usually of 6-12 students are involved in the discussion for
devising nursing care for a patient with specific disease condition. After selecting a patient
for the conference, the date and venue is fixed and the students have to prepare well in
advance and actively participate in the discussion. Condition of the patient, signs and
symptoms, line of management and nursing care are discussed. The teacher involves
students, especially the student who is looking after the patient in the discussion. The
students’ doubts and questions regarding nursing care is clarified and answered. It helps
the students to use critical thinking in the care of the patient.
