 Pentecost in the Old Testament (for the Hebrew) literally means fiftieth (50 th). It is
celebrated with two feasts:
a. The feast of harvest or feast of first fruits, 50 days after the seed had
been planted to the ground. In this feast, pilgrims bearing baskets of
their first fruits offer these in procession to the temple as thanksgiving.
b. Torah Festival. In later Judaism (two centuries before Christ),
Pentecost was celebrated on the fiftieth day after the Passover
Sabbath )a commemoration of the Hebrew being spared from the last
plague in Egypt in the Exodus story) to celebrate the giving of the Law
of Sinai where God had made them His people.

THE NEW MEANING OF PENTECOST

Fifty days, that is seven weeks and a day, after Jesus died and rose from the
dead. Jesus forms a new covenant, a new people, there was a harvest of the
resurrection. In a form of wind and fire, He sent His Spirit upon His Church. The Church is
born. Altogether, the feast of harvest and the Feast of Torah was given a new meaning.
Pentecost becomes a day of celebration for the outpouring of the holy spirit and spread of
the Gospel to all nations. The follower of Jesus was empowered by the Holy Spirit to go
and continue what Jesus has started, to go to their mission.

NATURE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

His Eminence Luis Antonio Tagle, the Archbishop of Manila, once described the
Holy Spirit as “the love between the Father and the son.” The Holy Spirit is the love that
Jesus sent to be with us. Thus, the Holy Spirit is central in our relationship with God. It is
through the Holy Spirit the God facilitates the salvation that Christ made possible. God
expresses Himself to humankind through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is a multifaceted
expression of God’s power, love, and life.

WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

1. our first encounter with the Holy Spirit is when He frees us of our sin and brings us
to repentance and faith, guiding us to fullness of life in Christ.
2. The Holy Spirit is the counselor who is always present with us and reminds us of
what Jesus did for the love of us. He is our encourager and comforter when we are
hurting and discouraged.
3. He brings peace in the midst of storms. He pours in the grace and power that we
need.
4. The Holy Spirit is present in the community life of the church, inspiring unity,
worship, and service. His presence is realized as the church is open and
responsive to the Spirit’s Fellowship.
5. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth who guides us in understanding the truths of
the Bible. He helps us discern what the text and lessons is the Bible really mean.
6. Not only does the Holy Spirit guide our prayers, he steps in to intercede for us
when we cannot put our feelings into words.
7. He empowers and inspires us to evangelize.
8. The Holy Spirit distributes spiritual gifts as He deems best throughout the Body of
Christ. Every Christian receives a gift at the moment of salvation.
9. The Holy Spirit guides the Church in setting apart persons for leadership. The
Church is responsible to use of the gifts of the Spirit in its life and ministry.
