MODULE 1

DEFINITIONS AND CONCEPTS OF PHILOSOPHY

Activities

1. Having read these definitions and concepts of philosophy, state your own view of
philosophy.

My own definition of philosophy is knowing your purpose in life through

understanding the life you have, the way you interacting with others, and perceiving
things. However, based on the definition given above some of the philosophers
perceive Philosophy in different ways, such as Gregorio and Gregorio (1979) said it is
a study of life, while Calderon (1998) cited it is a science, moreover, according to
(Zulueta and Maglaya, 2004) it plays a vital role in education. For me, all the
definitions given were true, because we have different philosophies in life to believe in.

2. Explain your answer to this question, “Why is it important to know these definitions and
concepts of philosophy?”

It is important to know the different definitions and concepts of philosophy

because it helps us to think carefully and clearly about important issues, especially for
debatable matters. It sharpens my analytical abilities, in identifying and evaluating the
strength and weaknesses.of an argument independently. And also knowing your
philosophy in life, we learn how to reflect from our everyday living, explore all the
existing questions that come to our mind.

3. You may read more definitions and concepts of philosophy from other sources. Try
surfing in the internet reading other materials. Do you find any difference from those
given? Please provide the best-chosen definition that you got from other sources.

Through surfing on the internet I found this:

Philosophy (from Greek: φιλοσοφία, philosophia, 'love of wisdom') is the study

of general and fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, values, reason,
mind, and language. Such questions are often posed as problems to be studied or
resolved. The term was probably coined by Pythagoras (c. 570 – 495 BCE).
The definition I found on the internet is almost the same as the definitions given
above. The philosophy talks about the study of knowledge and asking about existence.

MODULE 2
PHILOSOPHY AND EDUCATION

Activities

1. Do you believe that philosophy plays an important role in the educational

process? Explain your answer.

Yes, because with the help of knowing the philosophy and what we
believe in, as an educator we can explain things differently. We can analyze
or perceive the view of our students so that we know how to approach them.
We have a different perspective on life, we can determine why our students
are behaving differently with other students, what are they believing for, they
wanted to be, and how they think.

2. Illustrate by giving a school activity or scenario for your answer in

Question#1.

The teacher is discussing her/his lesson and he/she notices that

most of the students are not interested in listening to her/his. The teacher
gives a motivational video before the discussion started and whoever
answers his/her questions would get a reward from her/his. Whenever the
teacher has a vacant time, she/he spends time talking to his/her class.

3. How do you explain to students like you the relationship between

philosophy and education?

I will explain to my students that Philosophy guides us in decision

making and developing oneself, with the help of analyzing and critiquing a
particular problem by resolving it wisely and independently. Furthermore,
Philosophy in education trains learners to recognize synthesize,
internalize, and assess various ideas, facts, opinions, voluminous
knowledge acquired, and encountered.

Bonus Activity:
Notice that:
Socrates is talking to someone about something.
Plato is pointing up into the air/above.
Aristotle is standing next to Plato and pointing out to the earth.

To do:
Explain why the three philosophers are depicted that way. How they are depicted in the
painting also explains the philosophy that they believe.

Plato's Theory of Forms asserts that the physical world is not really the 'real' world; instead,
ultimate reality exists beyond our physical world.
In my opinion the Plato is pointing upward, because he believed that all the things in this
world are eternal and unchanging and that is the reality.

Socrates believed that philosophy should achieve practical results for the greater well-being of
society.
He believed that the mind is important rather than the human body. It was great to have
the ultimate wisdom comes if you know yourself. He is known for the Socratic method, the more
the person knows the greater she/he acquire knowledge to have good and practical reasoning
for aiming his happiness.
In my opinion, based on the painting he is notable for asking or inquiring something to
others for better reasoning and judgment. Maybe he likes debating with others that’s why he is
depicting talking with others.

According to Aristotle, happiness consists in achieving, through the course of a whole lifetime,
all the goods — health, wealth, knowledge, friends, etc. — that lead to the perfection of human
nature and to the enrichment of human life.
Based on the painting, he is pointing out to the earth because he describes the natural
philosophy as examining the natural phenomena of a natural world. And also he is holding a
book, in my opinion, it was a book of Ethics.
Based on his saying to have a happy and contented life we must achieve our goals.
