LOAD CALCULATION
Load Calculation for the RCC I Girder
1. Dead load :

1.1 Dead load due to Self weight of the Girder :

Self weight of girder is assigned on model by using self weight command in construction stage model.

1.2 Dead load due to Self weight of the intermediate cross girder and end cross girder :
Self weight of intermediate cross girder and end cross girder is assigned on model by using self weight command in
construction stage model.

1.3 Dead load due to weight of the deck slab :

1.3.1 Dead load due to weight of the deck slab (on inner girder):

C/C of Girder = 2.800 m

Thcikness of deck slab = 0.250 m
Load on inner long girder = 18.200 kN/m

1.3.2 Dead load due to weight of the deck slab (on outer girder):

Overhang outside the outer girder = 1.500 m

Length of footpath slab = 1.925 m
Load on outer long girder = 31.200 kN/m
Eccentricity of load w.r.t. cg of outer girder = 0.240 m
Moment due to footpath slab = 7.488 kN-m/m

2. Super Imposed Dead load :

The super imposed dead load on the super structure consists of the 60 mm thick Wearing course, Crash barriers on
either side, cement concrete layer over the footpath on either side. For analysis of the super imposed dead load effects
on the superstructure, the loads and corresponding moments due to them are applied into the staad model & the
resultant effects are taken into account for the design of the Girders, deck and cross girders.

2.1 Wearing course load on girders

Thickness of WC considered in design = 0.100 m
Load of WC (on 7.55m Carriageway) = 2.2 kN/m2

2.2 Crash Barriers

Crash barrier load = 7.500 kN/m

2.3 Utility
Crash barrier load = 5.000 kN/m

3. Nominal Pedestrian Live Load :

Nominal pedestrian live load (pressure load) = 5.000 kN/m2 (As per Cl. 6.5.1, BS 5400-2:2006)
Width of footpath = 1.45 m
Nominal pedestrian live load = 7.25 kN/m
4. Live Load :

Width of carriageway = 7.55 m

No. of notional lanes = 3 Nos
(As per Cl. 3.1.4 of Road Design Manual(Part IV) - Bridge Design, Republic of Kenya)
Notional lane width = 2.5 m < 3.65 m
= 2.5 m (As per Cl. 3.2.9.3.1, BS 5400-2:2006)

4.1 HA Loading
Loaded length = 12 m
Nominal uniformly distributed(UDL) for HA load
0.67
W = 336(1/L)

Pressure for HA load =63.58/2.5 = 25.43 kN/m2

Nominal knife edge load(KEL) = 120 kN (As per Cl. 6.2.2, BS 5400-2:2006)

HA lane factor for first lane (b 1) = a1 = 0.274 bL = 0.69 (As per Table 14, BS 5400-2:2006)
for second lane(b 2) = a1 = 0.274 bL = 0.69
for third lane (b 3) = 0.60

4.2 HB Loading

Dimention of HB vehicle

Here inner axle spacing considered = 6 m

Unit of HB loading considered = 45 Unit
Per axle load = 450 kN
Per wheel load = 112.5 kN

4.3 Accidental Loading

Accidental load is considered over footpath.

Accidental wheel loading

4.4 Centrifugal loads

(As per Cl. 6.9, BS 5400-2:2006)
Radius of curvature at center line of carriageway = 600 m
Centrifugal loads is not negligible as radius of curvature is less than 1000m. Hence centrifugal force is considered in design.

Nominal centrifugal load Fc = 40000/ ( r + 150 ) where r in m

(As per Cl. 6.9, BS 5400-2:2006) = 53.33 kN r= 600 m
This force is acting at surface of carriageway.
Eccentricity w.r.t cg of girder = 0.49 m

Associated nominal primary live load = 400 kN distributed over notional lane fpr a length of 6m
(As per Cl. 6.9.2, BS 5400-2:2006)
4.5 Longitudinal loads
Longitudinal load for HA loading = 346 kN < 750 kN
(As per Cl. 6.10.1, BS 5400-2:2006)
Pressure for longitudinal load = 346 / 11 / 2.5 = 12.58 kN/m2

Longitudinal load for HB loading is 25% of vertical load.

(As per Cl. 6.10.2, BS 5400-2:2006)

Vertical load will be same as defined in point no.4.1 and 4.2 .

4.6 Accidental load due to skidding

Accidental load due to skidding will be = 300 kN

(As per Cl. 6.11.1, BS 5400-2:2006)

Thk. Of wearing course (twc) = 0.06 m
Depth of Girder (D) = 0.90 m
C.G. of girder from bottom (y) = 0.72 m
Eccentricity w.r.t cg of girder d + twc + D - y = 0.49 m
Moment due to skidding at cg of Girder = 146.8 kN-m

One lane HA loading is considered as vertical load.

(As per Cl. 6.11.3, BS 5400-2:2006)

4. Determination of Moment capacity of the Section :

4.1 Deck Slab section (Ultimate Limit State of failure) :

1000
250

Moment of resistance of the section (Mu,lim)= 0.87 fy As Z

(As per eq. 1, BS 5400: Part4-1990) = 125.6 kN-m
The Lever arm, Z = = 156.088 mm
Design moment = 95.9 kN-m Hence O.K.
5. Determination of Shear capacity of the Section :

(As per Cl no. 5.3.3, BS 5400: Part4-1990)

5.1 Calculation of shear reinforcement:
Nominal shear stress v = V/bd = 0.44 Mpa
Ultimate shear stress in concrete (vc) = 0.68 Mpa
(As per Table 8, BS 5400: Part4-1990)
Depth factor (ξs) = 0.70
(As per Table 9, BS 5400: Part4-1990)
ξs vc = 0.48 Mpa No Shear Reinforcement is required

5.2 Check for punching shear :

Punching shear stress v = V/bd = 0.39 Mpa

Ultimate shear stress in concrete (vc) = 0.68 Mpa
(As per Table 8, BS 5400: Part4-1990)
Depth factor (ξs) = 0.70
(As per Table 9, BS 5400: Part4-1990)
ξs vc = 0.48 Mpa Safe against punching shear
6. Check for Serviceability of the section

6.1 Deck Slab section (stress check):

Strain Diagram Stress Diagram

Neutral axis depth = 81.1 mm Stress at extreme compression fiber = 8.52 MPa
2
Concrete under compression = 81061.7041 mm Stress at Reinforcing bars = 171.7 MPa
Compressive force, C = 345.20 kN Total tensile force = 345.20 kN
Moment of Resistance, Mr = 56.26 kNm Applied moment = 87.2 kNm
Difference in Force, C-T = 0.00 kN Difference in Moment = -30.96 kNm

Total compressive stress at top of deck =8.5 = 8.52 MPa

Hence O.K.
6.2 Deck Slab section (crack width check):-
s

cmin acr1

Tensile strain at the beam soffit e1 = 0.00063 0.000858

Steel strain ignoring tension stiffening es = 0.00135
< design yield strain of 0.002001
Width of section at level of tension steel, bt = 625.0 mm
Overall depth of the section, h = 250.0 mm
Distance from the compression face to the point at which crack width is being calculated, a'
= 250.0 mm
Depth of the concrete in compression,dc = 81.1 mm
Area of tension steel, As = 2010.6 mm2
Moment due to permanent load, Mg = 7.8 kN-m
Moment due to live load, Mq = 15.0 kN-m

Strain due to tension stiffening, em = e1 - [3.8bth(a'-dc)/{esAs(h-dc)}] [(1-Mq/Mg)10-9]

(As per eq. 25, BS 5400: Part4-1990) = 0.00084
Cover to center reinf. = 60.0 mm
Cover to outermost reinforcement, Cnom = 52.0 mm
Spacing of bar, s = 100.0 mm
Distance from the crack to reinforcement acr = 70.1 mm
(at a location equidistant from two bars)
3acrεm
Design surface crack =
1 2 acr  cnom / h  dc 

= 3 * 70.1 * 0.00084 / (1 + 2 * 10.1 / 168.94) = 0.145 mm
