Laboratory 2 – Sound Measurement using

Smartphone Application
Objectives:
1. To conduct sound level measurement using smartphone built-in microphone.
2. To analyze audio signal under different conditions using Scilab Software.

Introduction:
Apart from making calls and accessing the internet, smartphones are powerful computing devices
equipped with different sensors (light sensors, gyroscopes, accelerometers, biometric sensors
and etc.) to fulfill various features and purposes. Smartphone for example can be used as a sound
measuring device using the built-in microphones. Sound can be recorded, organized and edited
by using audio recording application. For further processing, Scilab software can be used to
generate and analyze sound waves recorded from the smartphones.

Equipment & Components:

Audio file sample
Scilab Software
Sound measuring application
Smartphone with built-in microphone
Speaker/Sound source

Task:

You will play the given audio file sample. Position your smartphone at different distances from
the speaker and record the audio. Distance used in the experiment is 5 cm, 25 cm and 45 cm.

Result and Discussion:

1. By using Scilab software, plot the original and recorded audio signals in both time and
frequency domains. Show the program.
2. Evaluate these signals with the signal from the original audio file.
3. Please include pictures of your experimental work showing different distances. Discuss the
effect of measurement distances on the results obtained.
