Marriage traditions in different

countries

Wedding traditions are a big part of most cultures. In some cultures, the history of wedding
traditions are forgotten, while in others, the root of the history is very important. There are so many
cool wedding customs found around the world and each has its own distinct attributes.

Indian
Indian weddings traditionally last three days—all ceremonies considered. The first of these
ceremonies is Misri, which takes place several days before the actual wedding day. In this ceremony,
the marrying couple exchanges prayers, flower garlands and gold rings. The Mehendi celebration
consists of the families of the bride and groom (or just the women) getting together for song and
dance. Only women attend this event in which intricate patters are drawn on their hands and feet
with mehendi (also known as henna). In Haldi ceremony, both sides of the family spread a mixture of
oil, water and turmeric over the skin and clothes of the bride and groom. In traditional Indian
weddings, bright colors are often used.

Chine
Time to get mystical. To select a wedding date, the young couple must take a knife and together
slaughter a chick. The date is then divined by the appearance of the chick’s liver. If the liver has an
unfortunate appearance, they must keep killing chicks until they find a good one. Starting 30 days
before the wedding, the bride spends an hour a day crying. Ten days later, she is joined by her
mother, and then ten days after that, her grandmother. I know what you’re thinking, but this is
actually meant as an expression of joy and deep love

Indonesia
After the wedding, the bride and groom are not allowed to use the bathroom for three whole days.
They cannot leave the house. The couple is watched over and are allowed minimal amounts of food
and drink. If the custom is not practiced, they believe it will bring bad luck to the couple, with
consequences such as a broken marriage, infidelity or death of their children. After three days, the
couple is allowed to return to normal life and begin their marriage.

Congo
Weddings are considered a thoughtful affair in this part of Africa, and for everything to be taken
seriously, the couple cannot smile during or after the ceremony. Nor are they allowed to smile in any
wedding day photos.

Sweden
If the groom leaves the room for any reason, all the other men at the wedding are allowed to kiss
the bride. The same goes for the groom and female guests if the bride should leave the room.

Germany
Guests arrive the night before the wedding, usually at the home of the bride, and break any
porcelain object they can get their hands on. This act is thought to bring good luck to the couple.
However, they cannot break glass, as it symbolizes happiness. After the porcelain has been broken,
the couple cleans it up, which is supposed to teach them that married life will not be easy, but by
working together, they can overcome any challenge. Today, the new generation breaks the porcelain
on the wedding day rather than the night before.

France
French brides and grooms traditionally eat chocolate and champagne after the reception.

Norway
Another Norwegian tradition states that the bride will wear an ornate silver and gold crown that has
small charms dangling all around it. When she moves, the tinkling sound is supposed to deflect evil
spirits.

Sudan
There are certain tribes in Southern Sudan that believe a marriage can only prosper if the bride can
give birth to two children. If she fails to do so, the groom can divorce her.

Russia
A traditional Russian wedding can last between two days and one week. The celebration involves
dancing, singing, toasting, and banqueting. Following the civil ceremony, the newlyweds and their
witnesses travel around the city in a limousine and tour many historical sites. There are times when
close friends join them as well. This presents the primary opportunity for the majority of the
wedding photographs that are taken at varying historical places around the town or city.

Azerbaijan
qız bəyənmə (approval of the choice) are the first conditions of the wedding. Nearest relatives of the
groom, who are gathered together to marry him, begin gathering information about the
bride, her parents, and the family where she lives. The day for sending matchmakers to the
bride's house is fixed when the groom's choice is approved. More respected, elder relatives
of the groom take part in the “main” matchmaking ceremony. Matchmaking follows
engagement traditions. After the father decides to give his daughter for marriage, the groom
entertains his new relatives with tea and sweeties in the bride's house. The period after the
engagement and before the wedding is the main period in the life of a young couple. Earlier
the length of this stage was very significant, sometimes extending several years. Later this
period was significantly shortened. After engagement, bride's family begins to prepare cehiz
for their daughter's future family life. Cehiz is be in the form of all the needed equipment to
fill the house. A ceremony of “henna smearing” is held on the evening of the first day of the
wedding at the bride's house. According to tradition, on the night of “henna smearing”, the
groom came to the bride's house for “toy payi” (wedding portion) and took sheep and a hen,
giving gifts and money in return.

All marriage traditions are interesting and important for people who live in that country. And for me,
the best of them is our customs, Azerbaijani
