Types of Wires

The document discusses different types of wires and wiring systems. It describes 5 types of wires: VIR wires which have a rubber insulation layer and are used for domestic wiring, TRS/CTS wires which have an additional tough rubber sheath for protection from moisture and tearing, PVC wires which have polyvinyl chloride insulation and are mainly used in conduit and casing systems, lead sheathed wires which are similar to CTS wires but have a lead alloy sheath, and weatherproof wires which have 3 braids saturated in waterproofing compound for outdoor use. It also outlines 4 wiring systems: cleat wiring where wires are held to walls using porcelain cleats (exposed), casing and capping wiring where wires are run in

Types of wires

1. VIR (Vulcanised Indian Rubber) wires: Wires consists of copper conductor covered by
a layer of rubber insulation. The rubber insulation thickness depends on the voltage
for which the wire is to be used. To increase the current carrying capacity the wire
has greater number of strands. They are used for ordinary domestic wiring.
2. TRS/CTS: These wires are provided with additional tough rubber sheath over the
insulation. This gives protection from moisture and tear.TRS (Tough Rubber
Sheathed) and CTS (Cab Tyre Sheathed) wires are available in single core, twin cores
and three cores.
3. PVC(Polyvinyl chloride): In these PVC insulation is provided over the conductors. Pvc
provides mechanical strength and water proofing to the wires. These are mainly
used in conduit, capping and casing wiring systems.
4. Lead Sheathed wires: These are similar to CTS wires except that they have lead alloy
instead of tough rubber. In addition to mechanical strength these can be used for
earthing purpose.
5. Weather proof wires: These comprise of copper or aluminium conductor covered
with three braids of fibrous yarn thoroughly saturated with water proofing
compound. These are used for outdoor purposes.

Types of wiring systems

1. Cleat wiring: In this type of wiring system PVS wires are held to walls and
ceilings using porcelain cleats. These cleats are made in two halves; the lower
part has grooves to hold wires and the upper part is used to cover it and the
combination is fitted to wall with the help of wooden gutty. The wires are
exposed to view, to dust and dirt.
2. Casing and capping wiring: In this type of wiring system PVC wires are carried in
the grooves of wooden casing which is then covered by wooden capping. This
type of wiring is suitable for low voltage installations in dry places.
3. Batten wiring: In this type of wiring system either TRS or PVC wires are run on
well seasoned and well varnished teak or any hard wood batten not less than 10
mm thick. These are held with the walls with the help of wooden gutties.Wires
are on to the batten with the help of tinned brass clips spaced at not more than
10 cm for horizontal runs and 15 cm for vertical runs.
4. Conduit wiring: In this type of wiring system PVC wires are passed through
conduit pipe of required capacity. It is of two types surface conduit and
concealed conduit. In the surface conduit the conduit pipe is fixed to the walls
using saddles. These saddles are fixed using wooden gutties. In the concealed
conduit wiring the conduit is buried in the plaster. In case the thickness of plaster
is not sufficient then a case is made in the walls of the building during
construction and the conduit is fitted in it. Suitable inspection boxes are provided
at regular intervals.
