Definition of Reservoir Management

By: Reservoir Management of Malaysian Petroleum Reservoirs

▪ is a process of maximizing hydrocarbon recovery economically

▪ “is a continuous process from discovery to abandonment, with

the objective of depleting a reservoir efficiently & economically”

By: US DOE 1996…

▪ “…Requires knowledge of…the reservoir system & the

technology needed…to describe, analyze & to exploit the
reservoir…and of the business environment…”

▪ “monitoring activity (surveillance)…requires maintaining an

awareness of changes in…the reservoir (system) performance,
the technology & the business environment..”
Reservoir Management Process
RMP during Production Phase

Production Phase: Depletion/Abandonment:

➢ Post development ➢ Is the reservoir truly depleted

➢ Production forecast ➢ Is there is bypassed reservoir/

intervals
➢ Reservoir surveillance
➢ New enhanced recovery methods
➢ Anomalies behavior
➢ Is field worth to someone else
➢ Injection rate &
distribution management
➢ Production & reserves
optimization
➢ Reserves upgrading
Reservoir Surveillance Activities

1) Static Gradient Survey (SGS)

▫ Determine Reservoir Pressure, Pr

▫ Gather inflow performance data during
static
▫ Record static fluid level in tubing

2) Flowing Gradient Survey (FGS)

▫ Determine reservoir flowing pressure, Pwf

▫ Gather data for gas lift valve performance
Reservoir Surveillance Activities (Cont’d)

3) Pressure Build-Up(PBU)/Injectivity fall off test(IFO)

▫ Determine Productivity Index (PI), Skin & Permeability

▫ Useful data to monitor reservoir performance and verify
potential reservoir damage

4) Production Logging Tool (PLT)

▫ Determine the production split ratio for commingle
production
▫ Identify oil/water/gas hold-up and source of water/gas
in formation
