比如说... for example

我很爱看电影,比如说科幻片和战争片。
Wǒ hěn ài kàn diànyǐng, bǐrúshuō
kēhuànpiàn hé zhànzhēngpiàn.
I love watching movies, for example
sci-fi movies and war movies.

有的汉字看起来很像,比如说:⼲、千,贝、见。
Yǒude Hànzìkànqǐlái hěn xiàng,
bǐrúshuō: gān、qiān, bèi、jiàn.
Some Chinese characters look similar,
for example, ⼲、千and ⻉、⻅.

有⼏个拍动作片的演员,我很喜欢,
比如说:成龙、甄⼦丹。
Yǒu jǐ ge pāi dò ngzuò piàn de yǎnyuán, wǒhěn
xǐhuān, bǐrúshuō: Chéngló ng、Zhēn Zǐdān.
I like some actors who act in action movies,
for example, Jackie Chan and Donnie Yen’’.
4

多V / 少V

When you try to suggest somebody should do something

more or less, put 多 or 少 before the verb.

你应该少吃⼀点。
Nǐ yīnggāi shǎo chī yìdiǎn.
You should eat a bit less .

这家店今天打折,我们多买⼀点东西吧!
Zhè jiā diàn jīntiān dǎzhé,
wǒmen duō mǎi yìdiǎn dōngxi ba!
This store has sale today. Let’s buy more stuff.

我们觉得⽆聊,所以后来又多看了⼀部电影。
Wǒmen juéde wúliáo, suǒyǐ hò ulái
yò u duō kànle yíbù diànyǐng.
We felt bored, so we watched one more movie late.
5

还是......

This 还是 means “still” in English. It is used to express that

some things are gonna remain the same no matter what.

这个语法老师说了半天,我还是不懂。
Zhè ge yǔfǎ lǎoshī shuōle bàntiān, wǒ háishìbù dǒng.
The teacher explained the grammar for a long time,
but I still don’t understand it.

我去过中国很多地⽅,但我还是最喜欢成都。
Wǒ qù guò Zhōngguó hěn duō dìfāng,
dàn wǒ háishìzuìxǐhuān Chéngdū.
I have been to many places in China,
but I still like Chengdu the most.

虽然⼤家都不喜欢那部爱情片,不过我还是很喜欢。
Suīrán dàjiā dōu bù xǐhuān nà bù àiqíngpiàn,
bú guò wǒ háishìhěn xǐhuān.
Although people don’t like that romantic movie,
I still like it a lot.
6

会...的

When you want to reassure others, use this 会...的 pattern,

and it usually appears with the adverb ⼀定, which means
“definitely”.

他⼀定会来的,别担⼼。
Tā yídìng huìlái de, bié dānxīn.
He will definitely be there. Don’t worry.

我会好好欣赏这部电影的,谢谢你的推荐。
Wǒ huìhǎohǎo xīnshǎng zhè bù diànyǐng de,
xièxie nǐ de tuījiàn.
I will appreciate this movie.
Thank you for your recommendation.

多练习,你们会知道怎么说中⽂的!
Duō liànxí, nǐmen huìzhīdào
zěnme shuō Zhōngwén de.
Practice more. You will know how to speak Chinese!
7

语⾔中⼼⻔⼝,两⼈刚下课在⻔⼝聊天。
At the language center’s main entrance. These two people just finished class and
they’re chatting at the main entrance.

Lily 中⽂课越来越难了。
Zhōngwénkè yuè lái yuè nán le.
Chinese class is getting harder and harder.

Pipe 怎么说?
Zěnme shuō?
What do you mean?

Lily 有的汉字,有两、三个发⾳。⽐如说,〝⽬的〞的〝的〞,也念de,〝了解〞的
〝了〞,也念le。
Yǒude hànzì, yǒu liǎng、sān ge fāyīn. Bǐrúshuō, “mù dì” de “dì”, yě niàn de,
“liǎojiě” de “liǎo”, yěniàn le.
Some Chinese characters have two or three pronunciations. For example, the
“di” in ⽬的 (mu di) is also pronounced as “de”, and the “liao” in 了解 (liao jie)
is also pronounced as “le”.

Pipe 没错。 还有中⽂的语法。很多⼈说中⽂没有语法。怎么可能?

Méicuò . Hái yǒu Zhōngwén de yǔfǎ. Hěn duō rén shuō Zhōngwén méi yǒu
yǔfǎ. Zěnme kěnéng?
That’s correct. And there’s also Chinese’s grammar. Many people say Chinese
doesn’t have grammar. But, how’s that even possible?

Lily 我最怕的是〝两件⾐服〞。
Wǒ zuìpà de shì“liǎng jiàn yīfú”.
What I’m most afraid of is “two articles of clothing”.

Pipe 两件⾐服?
Liǎng jiàn yīfú?
Two articles of clothing?
8

Lily ⽐如说,⼀本书、五张桌⼦、三辆⻋。
Bǐrúshuō, yìběn shū、wǔ zhāng zhuōzi、sān liàng chē.
For example, one book, five tables, three cars.

Pipe 你说的是量词,这个真的不容易,要多练习。
Nǐ shuō de shìliàngcí,zhè ge zhēnde bù ró ngyì,yào duō liànxí.
What you’re talking about is measure words. This aspect isn’t easy at all. So,
you’ll need to practice more.

Lily 说到练习,汉字的笔画也很复杂。我每天都练习写汉字,可是还是会忘记。
Shuōdào liànxí,hànzìde bǐhuà yě hěn fù zá。Wǒ měi tiān dōu liànxíxiě hànzì,
kěshì háishìhuìwàngjì.
Speaking of practice, the stroke order for characters is also really
complicated. I practice writing characters every day, but I’ll still forget how to
write them.

Pipe 我也是这样,慢慢来,⼀定会进步的。
Wǒ yě shìzhèyàng, mànmàn lái, yídìng huìjìnbù de.
I’m like that, too. Take your time. You’re definitely going to improve.

Lily 希望进步得快⼀点。听说交中国男朋友,会进步得很快。
Xīwàng jìnbù de kuài yìdiǎn. Tīngshuō jiāo Zhōngguó nánpéngyǒu, huìjìnbù
de hěn kuài.
I hope I can improve a little faster. I’ve heard that having a Chinese boyfriend
will make you improve really fast.

Pipe 妳是认真的吗?利⽤交男⼥朋友学中⽂?
Nǐ shìrènzhēn de ma? Lìyò ng jiāo nán nǚpéngyǒu xué Zhōngwén?
Are you being serious? Taking advantage of a boyfriend or girlfriend just to
learn Chinese?

Lily 我是开玩笑的。
Wǒ shìkāi wánxiào de.
I’m just kidding.
