1. Determine the percentage of total energy dissipated due to friction at tool chip interface and
ratio of heat generation in primary and secondary deformation zones while machining mild steel,
given that work material shear stress is 400 X 106 N/m2, uncut chip thickness is 0.5 mm, cutting
speed is 20 m/min, rake angle is 5o, width of cut is 5 mm, and coefficient of friction is 0.5.

2. Determine the temperature rise in primary zone while machining mild steel, given that work
material shear stress is 300 X 106 N/m2, density is 6500 kg/m3, thermal conductivity is 32 W/m-
o
C, specific heat is 480 J/kg-oC, uncut chip thickness is 0.25 mm, cutting speed is 30 m/min, rake
angle is 10o, width of cut is 3 mm, coefficient of friction is 0.5.

3. Determine the total heat developed while machining mild steel, given that work material shear
stress is 280 X 106 N/m2, density is 6300 kg/m3, thermal conductivity is 30 W/m-oC, specific
heat is 460 J/kg-oC, uncut chip thickness is 0.2 mm, cutting speed is 36 m/min, rake angle is 10o,

25%. Determine i) The percentage of total energy dissipated due to friction at tool chip interface,
ii) Ratio of heat generation in primary and secondary deformation zones, and iii) The
temperature rise in primary zone.

given that work material shear stress is 250 X 106 N/m2, density is 6000 kg/m3, thermal
conductivity is 30 W/m-oC, specific heat is 460 J/kg-oC, uncut chip thickness is 0.3 mm, cutting
speed is 50 m/min, rake angle is 10o, width of cut is 2 mm, coefficient of friction is 0.5. amount
of heat carried away by chip is 80% of total heat.
