LESSON NO. 1
TOPIC

INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY OF GLOBALIZATION

INTRODUCTION

Human beings have encountered many changes in their social relationships and social
cultures over the last century. Bauman (2003) says that globalization is a very important
change, if not, the "most important". According to Albrow (1996), the reality and omnipresence
of globalization make us part of the "global age". Many scholars gave and tried to formulate
their definitions. This resulted in different and contradicting views about the concept. All people
and all situations cannot be contained within a specific time frame as stated by Rhodan (2006).
In addition to that, globalization encompasses a multitude of processes that involves the
economy, political systems, and culture. Globalization directly affects social structures.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to
1. Differentiate the competing conceptions of globalization.
2. Identify the underlying philosophies of varying definitions of globalization.
3. Accord on a working definition of globalization for the course

LESSON PRESENTATION

DEFINING GLOBALIZATION
.
Conceptualizing globalization reveals a variety of perspectives. Globalization is an
ongoing process driven by political, economic, technological, and sociocultural forces. The
process of globalization since World War II has been driven by politicians' planning to break

1
down borders, hampering trade to increase prosperity and interdependence, and to decrease
the chance of future war. The globalization process has been further accelerated by the global
expansion of multinational corporations and the worldwide exchange of new developments in
science, technology, and product manufacturing and design. Hence, the term "globalization"
refers to economic globalization, that is, the integration of national economies into the
international economy through trade, direct foreign investment, capital flows, migration, and the
spread of technology. Globalization is also known as cultural globalization because many
people believe that globalization is driven by the worldwide export of western culture through
the new mass media: the film, radio, television, and recorded music. The development of
international transport and telecommunication is another driving force that speeds up the
process of globalization.

Definitions of Globalization
 It is described as the growing interdependence of the world's economies, cultures, and
populations, brought about by cross-border trade in goods and services, technology,
and flows of investment, people, and information.
 It means the onset of the borderless world as stated by Kenichi Ohmae.
 According to Robert Cox, globalization trend includes the internationalizing of
production, the new international division of labor, new migratory movements from South
to North, the new competitive environment that accelerates these processes, and the
internationalizing of the states, making the states into agencies of the globalizing world.
(RAWOO Netherlands Development Assistance Research Council, 2000, p. 14)
 Globalization is a trans-planetary process or a set of procedures involving increasing
liquidity and the growing multidirectional flows of people, objects, places, and
information, as well as the structures they encounter and create that are barriers to
expedite those flows (Ritzer, 2015, p. 2)
 According to Al-Rodhan, globalization encompasses the causes, course, and
consequences of transnational and transcultural integration of human and non-human
activities (2006, p. 5).

How can the concept and definitions help us understand globalization?

1. The perspective of the person who defines globalization shapes its definition.
2. The sociologist Cesare Poppi said that globalization is the debate, and the
discussion is globalization. One is always part of the others.
3. Globalization is a reality. It is transforming as human society develops.

In general, globalization is a concept that is not easy to define because, it has a shifting
nature. People may define it as complex, multifaceted, and can be influenced, depends on ow
they define it. Moreover, the issues and concerns involving globalization have a wide ranger –
from individuals to society, from small communities to nations and states. We could benefit
2
from it to the costs it could carry. Nevertheless, the task of defining globalization should
stimulate more discussions about it. It is more important that people experience globalization
and it should give them the interest of engaging in the study of it.

Various aspects of globalization which affect the world in several different ways.
 Industrial globalization- development of worldwide production markets and broader
access to a range of foreign products for consumers and companies, particularly the
movement of material and goods between and within financial markets.
 Financial globalization- development of global financial markets and better access to
external financing for borrowers.
 Economic globalization- establishing a universal common market, based on the freedom
of exchange of goods and capital.
 Political globalization- the formation of international organizations to regulate the
relationships among governments and to guarantee the rights arising from social and
economic globalization.

 Informational globalization- the increase in information flows between geographically

remote locations. (It is a technological change related to the advent of fiber optic
communications, satellites, and increased availability of telephone and Internet.)
 Cultural globalization- the sharing of ideas, attitudes, and values across national
borders. This sharing generally leads to interconnectedness and interaction between
people of diverse cultures and ways of life. The primary instruments for cultural
globalization are mass media and communication technologies.

SUMMARY/SYNTHESIS

Globalization is an important change for us to see ourselves as part of what we prefer as

the "global age." It is an ongoing process referred as economic globalization, industrial
globalization, financial globalization, political globalization, informational globalization, and
cultural globalization, that is, the integration of national economies into the international
economy through trade, direct foreign investment, capital flows, migration, the spread of
technology and sociocultural forces, also driven by the worldwide export of western culture
through the new mass media. The process of globalization has been further accelerated by the
global expansion of multinational corporations and the worldwide exchange of new
developments in science, technology, and product manufacturing and design. The
development of international transport and telecommunication is another driving force that
speeds up the process of globalization. It is a concept that is not easy to define because it is
complex, multifaceted, and can be influenced by the people who define it.
