Outcome: Students will investigate, plan and use strategies and resources to promote and enhance health,
safety and wellbeing in and around aquatic environments.
Task: Students will research information about a variety of aquatic environments with particular reference to
water safety. They will also visit an aquatic environment where they will conduct a risk assessment and develop
strategies that promote safe recreation in this location.
Presentation: Multimedia presentation in student’s choice of format, however, must include some pictures and
photos.
SECTION TASK
1. Aquatic a) What is an ‘Aquatic Environment’? Provide a definition and at least 3 examples with
Environments & a supporting image.
Water Safety b) What is Water Safety? Define using your own words.
c) Outline at least 5 strategies to ensure that you are safe in aquatic environments.
d) Identify 2 established water safety campaigns in Australia. Discuss the campaigns
aims and if they have been successful. Use research to support your statements.
2. Research an a) Name of the environment and a statement which explains exactly what type of

c) Name at least 3 activities that occur at this environment, for example
fishing/swimming/boating etc.
d) Briefly describe at least 3 potential risks that may occur in this environment.
e) Discuss a relevant personal story or find a news article that relates to water safety
that occurred in this type of environment.
f) Describe in detail one current water safety program that could be run in this
environment. How does this program reduce or prevent potential risks identified in
part D?
3. Site Visit a) Complete a site visit at a chosen aquatic environment and conduct the risk
assessment (attached) – don’t forget sun safety! Take photos to identify the risks
that you saw.
If you plan on visiting a swimming pool or aquatic centre, please ensure that you have
permission from the management of the centre, you may need to call and ask or email.
Remember to bring someone along with you to ensure that you are safe at all times.
