3 Tin and iron are commonly used in manufacture of cans.

(a) Suggest why tin instead of zinc is used to make cans?

(b) A mixture contains tin oxide and zinc oxide only. In an experiment for determining the empirical
formula of tin oxide, 49.89 g of the mixture was heated with carbon. Upon complete the reaction,
carbon dioxide, 9.81 g of zinc and 29.68 g of tin were formed.

4 Silver oxide cell is a primary cell containing potassium hydroxide. It is commonly used in small electric
device such as a watch.

(a) What is meant by the term ‘primary cell’ ?

(b) Suggest why a silver oxide cell is suitable for a watch.

(c) A student want to find out the mass of potassium hydroxide in the silver oxide cell with the
following steps.

6 Refer to the set-up for electroplating a teapot shown in the diagram below.

7 Petrol is widely used in most types of transportation such as taxis. It contains hydrocarbon with straight
chain ranging from C5H12 to C10H20.

10 Refer to the following chemical equation :

CH3COOH(aq) ⇄ CH3COO-(aq) + H+(aq) ∆H > 0

0.5 mol of ethanoic acid dissolve in water and dissociate as the above equation. The pH of solution
equals to 2.87 at 298 K.
