MOLDED FABRIC PACKING CONSTRUCTION
The performance of fabric reinforced packings is affected by the type of construction used to build
each ring. The standard method of construction used by CDI SEALS is radially oriented, biased ply
for pressure rings and female adapters.
Radially oriented plies yield a denser, more extrusion resistant ring than the conventional vertical ply
orientation used by many manufacturers. Radial ply rings contain up to 25% more plies of fabric than
competitive rings using vertical plies or rolled construction.
RADIAL orientation increases the extrusion resistance by utilizing the full strength of the woven
fabric rather than depending on the adhesion strength between the plies.
VERTICAL plies are beneficial in some rotary and low pressure applications due to increased lip
flexibility. These lips exert less radial squeeze at very low pressures and results in lower friction.
This advantage is reduced as pressure increases. Should your application require vertical ply
construction, please verify VERTICAL PLY with your inquiry or order.
ROLLED construction is a variation of the radial ply concept. Performance characteristics are similar
to the radial biased ply with differences being basically cosmetic. Should your application required
rolled construction, please verify ROLLED with your inquiry or order.
Bias orientation of the weave enhances the performance of the radial or vertical ply construction.
Bias weave reduces the loss of reinforced fibers in dynamic applications. Packing made with bias
orientation has yarn ends terminating approximately 45° to the I.D. and the O.D. Conventional die-
cut radial plies have four points on the I.D. and O.D. where the yarns are tangent to the diameter
and are easily worn away in dynamic applications. In non-biased vertical ply rings entire yarns can
wear away from the lip circumference.

GLAND DESIGN
Unusual gland design is often dictated by the existing service parameters. The following information
is offered for the more common applications. Inquiries regarding specific applications are always
welcome.
BI-DIRECTIONAL ASSEMBLIES:
8
GLAND DESIGN
GLAND TOLERANCES:
CDI V-Rings are manufactured with sufficient lip interference to accommodate tolerances of +/-.005”
on nominal gland diameters. Factors such as extrusion and side loading or deflection must be
considered. For applications involving high pressures and/or high surface speeds, it is
recommended that bores be held to nominal +.002/-.000” and rods to nominal
12% GW
+/-.001”.
15-25°
INSTALLATION CHAMFERS: GW
THREADED SURFACE:
GW
Installation of V-Rings over threaded surface is not recommended. When other
design criteria requires installation over or thru threaded surfaces, the threads
should be recessed 15% of the radial gland width (GW).
15% GW
GLAND LENGTHS:
Gland lengths are determined by the overall height of the packing set, which is calculated by using
the set height chart shown earlier in the brochure. Adjustable glands should allow enough
adjustments for adequate engagement at maximum set height and .010” compression per V-Ring at
minimum set height. Two-piece metal to metal glands require packing set height tolerances of
+/-.031”. The gland should be designed to mate metal to metal at the lowest allowed set height.
One-piece glands require packing set height tolerances of +/-.031”. Gland length should be the
maximum allowed set height plus .062. Shim rings totaling .062” should be included in these sets for
shimming after installation of the packing. Special gland lengths can be easily accommodated with
machined plastic adapters or spacers.
SURFACE FINISHES:
Static Surfaces are the surfaces on which there is no motion between that surface and the packing.
Satisfactory sealing can normally be obtained with finishes up to 64 RMS. Low (l<1000 PSI) and
high pressures (> 5000 PSI) should have finishes of 32 RMS or less. Low and high pressure sealing
is improved by the addition of a homogeneous V-Ring.
Dynamic surfaces are the surfaces on which there is not motion between that surface and the
packing. Recommended finishes for dynamic surfaces are 8 to 16 RMS. Rougher surface finishes
may be acceptable where speed and cycles are low.
SPRING LOADING:
Spring loading can be beneficial in dynamic applications, when manual adjustment of the packing is
unacceptable. The load provided by the spring eliminates adjustment problems, while compensating
for lip wear. For reciprocating pumps, the spring should exert 25/30 PSI on the packing to overcome
the vacuum generated by the suction stroke. Coil and wave springs can be used to improve low
pressure sealing in other applications.
