NAME OF THE TOOL – Motivation Assessment Scale
AUTHOR OF THE TOOL - V. Mark Durand and Daniel
Crimmins
TYPE – Scale (An instrument, usually a questionnare, designed to
measure a person’s position on some dimension.)
INTRODUCTION-
The mechanism that initiates, directs and preserves goal-oriented
behaviours is motivation. If it is having a glass of water to alleviate
hunger or reading a book to acquire information, it is what teiggers you
to act. The biological, emotional, social and cognitive forces which
trigger behavior are involved in motivation. The word ‘motivation’ is
often used in daily use to explain why a person does something. It is the
guiding force behind the actions of humans.

Different types of motivation are frequently described as being either

extrinsic or intrinsic:

 Extrinsic motivations are those that arise from outside of the

individual and often involve rewards such as trophies, money,
social recognition, or praise.
 Intrinsic motivations are those that arise from within the
individual, such as doing a complicated crossword puzzle purely
for the personal gratification of solving a problem.

ABOUT THE TOOL-

The Motivation Assessment Scale is a questionnaire designed to
identify those situations in which an individual is likely to behave in
certain ways. From this information, more informed decisions can be
made concerning the selection of appropriate reinforcers and
treatments. To complete the motivation assessment scale, select one
behaviour that is of particular interest. It is important that you identify
the behaviour very specifically. Once you have specified the
behaviour to be rated, read each question carefully and circle the one
number that best describes your observations of this behaviour.
COMPONENTS OF THE TOOL – The motivation assessment
scale (MAS) is a rating scale that assesses functions of problem
behaviour in individuals with developmental disabilities through
informant responses. It includes 16 questions and is comprised of four
subscales that each represents a possible function of the behaviour:
attention, escape, sensory, and tangible.

SCORING PROCEDURE –
Each question has six response options (0 = never, 1 = almost never, 2
= seldom, 3 = half the time, 4 = usually, 5 = almost always, and 6 =
always). Scores are calculated by summing the item ratings within a
particular subscale/function and calculating the mean rating for that
subscale.
