Rater Training Program

Employees are constantly seeking feedback from their employers on how they perform

on the job. A component of the performance appraisal process will be training raters to increase

the accuracy of providing accurate feedback to our employees. Therefore, this company will

utilize the following training programs on how this company aims to train its raters to decrease

biases, increase accuracy of evaluations, increase behavioral accuracy to improve observational

skills, and finally, increase rater confidence. Specifically, the rater training programs that will be

adopted in this system are Rater Error Training (RET),Frame-of-Reference Training (FOR),

Behavioral Observation Training (BOT).

In implementing this rater training program, managers will learn specific skills to make

decisions, proper evaluation of employee’s performances, their promotions, demotions, pay

increases and providing genuine and empathic feedback to the employees here at carepoint. A

technique that will be practiced to prevent error in performance evaluations is to train the raters.

These RET programs involve instructions on the different types of errors that are possible to

occur within this organization. Sensitivity training to the different types of errors/biases that may

occur can in itself help reduce the possibility that raters will commit these errors. Constant

training will be given to help evaluators recognize and avoid the most common errors in

performance evaluations. This program will allow the trainees to view examples of common

errors and to review suggestions on how to avoid making errors. The trainees will view videos

that are designed to show them various errors that they will fill out on the appraisal form. A

comparison will be made between the ratings provided by the trainees and the correct ratings.
FOR training will be implemented as it helps to improve appraisal accuracy. FOR

training aims at establishing common reference among assessors as to what constitutes effective

appraisal by establishing the rating standards and showing behavioural examples on various

rating dimensions. Raters will use the performance appraisal forms to rate employees from the

examples and justify why they gave the employee that rating. Afterwards the correct results will

be given for all raters to go over. FOR training improves accuracy and reduces halo effects as

compared to training on rating errors. This will be a major key in this company by having this

type of training to mitigate these biases and errors.

When conducting performance appraisals it will be necessary to ensure that the raters are

accurately observing work behaviors and maintaining specific memories of employees’ work

behaviors, in order to ensure that this happens, raters will observe specific facts and behaviors

that affect work performance as well as the end result and with this data, it will be the basis for a

performance appraisal.
