My Friends:

This unprecedented assemblage of the faculties and students of all the universities and of the teachers and
pupils of the public and private schools of Manila, for the purpose of doing me honor on the occasion of
my birthday, thrills me with unbounded happiness, for I see in this fine generous tribute not only your
kindly feelings for me but also your approval of the policies and achievements of my administration
during the last three years. This expression of your friendship and support will spur me to go onward with
renewed faith in the policies I have pursued and with redoubled determination to carry them to a
successful completion.

From President Manuel L, Quezon

2. Informal register because it features a more journalistic approach.

“Porener imomg uyab no?” (Is your boyfriend a foreigner?) asked the passenger beside me. We were on
the old van to Biliran from Ormoc. I knew this question was coming, but I asked nonetheless why she
thought so. I have the looks, she supplied—slender, long haired, dark. Foreigners go for that “exotic”
look.

3. Formal register because of its academic form.

Studies show that cultural diversity in body image exists. Black and white women differed regarding their
ethnic group’s ideal body image and their perceptions of how they compared with their ideal body image
(Mciza et al, 2005; Pan 2000; Perez et al. 2003). Women who perceived themselves as bigger or smaller
than the ideal body size for their ethnic group showed bulimic symptoms (Perez et al. 2003). Caucasian
and Hispanic Americans were found to exhibit more weight-related body image disturbance than African-
Americans and Asian-Americans. Studies are needed to determine whether the association between body
dissatisfaction and disordered eating attitude holds in various socioeconomic groups in developing
countries.

4. Casual Register because of the person’s personal experience.

Contemporary cultural studies the demise of the nation as an unquestioned assumption, almost a doctrinal
point of departure for speculations on the nature of the globalization process. Are concepts such as the
nation-state, national sovereignty, or nationalities, and their referents obsolete and useless? Whatever the
rumors about the demise of the nation-state, or the obsolescence of nationalism in the wake of September
11, 2001, agencies that assumes its healthy existence re busy: not only the members of the United
Nations, but also the metropolitan powers, with the United States as its military spearhead, have all
reaffirmed their civilizing nationalism with vengeance.
