Metacognitive Reading Report #5

Name: Tobias, Lord Andrei D. 4 – 4 – 20

GED104 – BM1

Instructions: Read Alastair Woodward’s How climate change affects the building blocks for health
(conversation.com/how-climate-change-affects-the-building-blocks-for-health-86202).Then,
accomplish the metacognitive reading report below.

1. Difficult Concepts

a. Transition Risks and Opportunities

b. Effects on Mental Health
c. Direct and Indirect Effects

2. Learning Insights

a. Before reading the article, I thought that changes in ocean circulation and the resulting

m
warmer temperatures disrupt the world’s normal weather patterns, bringing about more extreme

er as
weather and an increased frequency of severe and catastrophic storms, such as hurricanes and

co
typhoons. The increase in severe storms leads to a more frequent occurrence of such things as

eH w
“hundred-years floods,” decimation of habitats and property, not to mention, loss of life—human and

o.
otherwise. However, after reading the article, I now think/learned that the Arctic, Antarctic, Siberia, and
rs e
other frozen regions of the earth might experience more plant growth and milder climates.

b. Before reading the article, I thought that the acidification of warming oceans leads to a loss of
coral reefs. Coral reefs protect shorelines from heavy waves, storms, and floods and while they only
o

cover about 0.1% of the ocean floor, reefs provide a habitat for 25% of the ocean’s species. Demolished
aC s

reefs lead to increased erosion and coastal property damage and the extinction of species. However,
vi y re

after reading the article, I now think/learned that the Northwest Passage through the formerly icy
Canadian Arctic Archipelago could arguably open up to transportation.

c. Before reading the article, I thought that warming ocean waters means increased melting of
ed d

glaciers and ice sheets. Smaller ice sheets form each subsequent winter, which has a devastating impact
ar stu

on the habitat of cold-climate animals and the Earth’s reserves of freshwater. However, after reading
the article, I now think/learned that longer growing seasons could mean increased agricultural
production in some areas.

3. Discussion Questions
Th

a. How does Climate Change affects the people’s mental health?

b. How Royal Society concludes that more research is needed to better quantify the health
impacts of climate change?
sh

c. How has Global Warming affected the world so far?
