HOST: Like what I’ve said earlier, our topic for today is

Differentiate Permutation from Combination of n Objects Taken r at a Time.

Please always have your learning activity sheets with you so that you can

follow the discussion of our radio teacher for today, Mr./Ms. __________________.

If you are ready, let us all welcome teacher _____________.

BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

RADIO TEACHER: It’s a beautiful day my dear Grade 10 students! How are you doing? I hope

you are all excited, I am your mathematics 10 teacher and I am going to discuss

Differentiating Permutation from Combination of n Objects Taken r at a Time.

Do you already have your Mathematics Learning Activity sheet, Activity notebook,

papers and pen? (PAUSE) Very good! Let’s start.

BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

RADIO TEACHER:

In the past, you have learned about permutation and combination. These terms are very interesting

as well as very useful to make valuable application in your life. However, how do you know when to

use permutation or combination? That is what you are going to learn in today’s episode, that

is,

differentiating permutation from combination of n objects taken r at a time.

BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

RADIO TEACHER: Now, kindly open your Mathematics Learning Activity Sheet on page 1- 3,

and please find the background information for learners. There you can find a table that summarizes

the difference between permutation and combination. Notice that in permutation, arrangement or

order of elements is important. While in combination, arrangement or order of elements is not

important or necessary. A perfect example for permutation is your password. While selecting any

fruit in a fruit salad is an example of a combination.

Differentiating…333
Also take note of the key words that signals permutation or combination. For permutation, the

- MORE
following are the most common key words -
used: ordered ways, unique, schedule, rank, positions in

offices, and arrangements. On the other hand, the following key words are commonly used to mean

combination: select, choose, pick, combination, sample, and committee. So, whenever you read a

problem or a situation, look for these keywords for they are useful indicators that will guide you in

determining whether a certain situation is an example of combination or permutation.

The formula for permutation also differs from that for combination. The formula for permutation is

n! n!
P ( n , r )= . While the formula for combination is C ( n , r ) = . Please take note of the
( n−r ) ! r ! ( n−r ) !

difference.

BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

RADIO TEACHER: Are you now familiar with the differences between permutation and

combination? Very good. Let us now consider the examples given on page 2 of your learning activity

sheet.

BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

RADIO TEACHER:

Let us now read altogether example number 1.

In a group of 10 Mathematics club members, they have to select a committee of 4 members. As the

president of the club, Ana is already a member of the committee. In how many ways the committee

can be formed?

Now do you notice the underlined word “select”? Very good. Since the keyword used is select, then

the problem is an example of combination. And to solve for the number of ways that the committee

can be formed, we use the C(n,r) formula. Do you follow? Very good.

BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

RADIO TEACHER:

Let’s proceed to example number 2.

There are 8 bikers in a race. If all are concerned with the first, second, and third place finishers,
how many different orders of finishers are possible?
Differentiating…444
In this example, the keyword “orders” is used and therefore this problem is an example of
- MORE -
permutation and the P(n,r) formula is applicable to arrive at an answer.

BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

RADIO TEACHER:

Let us now consider example number 3. In example number 3, it says that there are 6 teams in a

PBA league, and each team plays with the other teams exactly once. What is the total number of

games played in the PBA league?

This time, there are no important keywords that will easily tell us of whether the problem is for

permutation or combination. In this case, we need to visualize the information provided in the

problem statement. For example, it is stated in the problem that there are 6 teams in a PBA league

and we know that each game is played between two teams. Furthermore, the match between team

A and team B is the same as the match between team B and team A. Therefore, for each match, we

must select 2 teams only. And in this case, arrangement is not important. So if arrangement or

order does not matter, then combination is application for this example. Thus, the C(n,r) formula

can be used to solve this problem.

BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

RADIO TEACHER: Students, are you still with me? That’s great.

It is now your time to apply what you have learned by doing Activity 2 which you can find in page

4 of your Learning Activity Sheet.

Direction: Identify which situations or questions involves permutation or combination.

Write your answers in your activity notebook.

1. Jenny places two oranges, five apples and nine bananas in a basket. Her children select six fruits

from the basket.

2. A pack of 52 cards was shuffled by Jess and asked Benny to choose any of the seven cards.

3. During the final round in running event, 5 runners are closing to finish line. The top three winners

will be awarded gold, silver and bronze medals.

4. How many 3-digit numbers can be formed from digits 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 if no repetition is

allowed.

5. Nisa rearranged the letters in the word “APPLICATION” and formed new three letter words.

6. A container has 5 candies, 8 chocolates, and 4 lollipops. In how many ways can you choose 4

chocolates.

7. How many distinguishable permutations are possible with all the letter of the word MESSAGES?

8. In how many ways can you arrange 6 fiction books, 4 non-fiction books and

9. In a wedding, the bride see to it that each guest shake hands to everyone. If there are 100

guests, how many shake hands will be done?

10. There are 12 points on a number line. How many possible rays can be drawn using the given

points?

RADIO TEACHER: After such an awesome activity, can you share to me how you were able to

differentiate Permutation from Combination? (PAUSE)

Please bear in mind the following key points:

1. Always look on the keywords used in the question or situation. The keywords can help you decide

whether permutation or combination is applicable.

2. The keywords like selection, choose, pick, and combination indicates that it is a combination.

3. Keywords like: arrangement, ordered, unique indicates that it is a permutation

4. If keywords are not given, then visualize the scenario presented in the question or situation and
then think in terms of combination and arrangement

BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

RADIO TEACHER: For your assessment, please answer Activity 3 on page 4 of your learning

activity sheet.

Directions: To summarize what you have learned in this lesson, answer the following questions:

(READ EACH QUESTION TWICE)

1. What are the keywords to identify a combination or permutation situations?

2. How would you differentiate combination from permutation?

Write your answers in your activity notebook.

BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

RADIO TEACHER: For your additional learning, please answer the Reflection, found in page 5 of

your Learning Activity Sheet by completing the statement “ In this lesson, I learned that …”
