OPERATING PROCEDURE

PROCEDURE - XMAS TREE VALVES & SSSV INTEGRITY TESTS

CHOKE LEAKAGE RATE CHECKS.
SYSTEM - Production.

Permit to Work :- Not required.

Environment impact :- Venting to Atmos.

Introduction.

These tests are carried out to check the integrity of the Xmas Tree isolation valves and the
Sub-Surface Safety Valve.
There are two types of valves, hydraulically operated valves, and Manually operated valves. In
addition, the opportunity is taken to determine the leakage rate of the Choke Valve. This
valve is a flow control valve, and not designed to be a high integrity isolation valve. The choke
actuators have been changed from Hydraulic to Electrical.

These checks are carried out in the following sequence: -

Choke, PWV, UMV, LMV & SSSV.

Note: - It is important that the person or persons carrying out these checks, are not
involved in any other activities until the well is back in normal operation.
If at any time during these checks, the Platform experiences a shutdown, abort the
exercise and close in the well. Ensure that all of the Xmas Tree hydraulics
Systems are back in service.

Hydraulic Valves: -
Production Wing Valve. (PWV) Often referred to as the Flow Wing Valve.
Service Wing Valve. (SWV) Meg injection or well kill line connection.
Upper Master Valve. (UMV) Often referred to as UMGV Upper Master Gate
Valve or HMV Hydraulic Master Valve.
Sub-Surface Safety Valve. (SSSV)
Manual Valves: -
Lower Master Valve. (LMV) often referred to as the Manual Master Valve.
this valve remains open unless an isolation is
required for maintenance work to take place,
Swab Valve. (SV) This valve isolates the Swab Cap which is the
mounting point for Wire-line equipment.

Prerequisites:-

The Platform has to be manned. The production sales gas rate is low enough to allow a
well to be out of service for a minimum of 3 hours. The test separator is to be available for
the period of the integrity checks

OPERATING PROCEDURE
Prerequisites Cont’d :-

Confirm that the Swab valve is open slightly to monitor the Tubing head pressure(THP) at the
swap cap.
Confirm that the THP at the local gauge and the CMS indication are in agreement.
If available fit a 0 to1000psi. standard test gauge to the swab cap position.
Note. the SWV will be in the closed position. This is the normal operating position, as the
MEG. Injection system is out of service.

Part 1. Choke Valve leakage rate check.

Note:- To carry out the Choke Valve leakage check, another well is needed in the test
separator. This well should be flowing at a constant fixed rate of at least 20mmscfd.
Although the choke is not classed an isolation valve, the leakage rate should be minimal, and
possibly below the Test Separators flow meter minimum range.

Well status prior to the leakage check.

SSSV open.
UMV open
PWV closed.
SWV closed.
Choke closed.

1. Inform the Terminal that you are about to start the integrity tests on well.
2. Line up the well to the test separator, and close the production manifold isolation valves.
3. Ensure that the choke is closed. Open the PWV. to determine whether the choke is
passing by observing for any increase in Test Separator flow.
4. Note the time and tubing head pressure. Monitor for 15mins. and record the indicated
flow rate at the Test Separator
5. Close the wing valve.

Part 2. Production Wing Valve Integrity checks. (PWV)

Well status prior to starting the integrity test:-

SSSV open.
UMV open.
PWV closed.
SWV closed.
Choke closed.

1. Close the Test Separator manifold isolation valves.

2. Open the Choke valve 5 %.
3. Depressurise the flowline via the PSV bypass valve to the atmospheric vent system, close
the bypass valve on completion.
4. Note the well THP at the swab cap, and time.
5. Monitor the flowline pressure build up for 20mins. Close the UMV after 20 mins. or if the
pressure exceeds 20bar and increasing rapidly. Note the time and pressure.
Maximum leakage rate 200psig/hr. or 100scf/hr.

OPERATING PROCEDURE
Part 3. Upper Master Valve integrity checks. (UMV)

Well status prior to starting the integrity checks:-

SSSV open.
UMV open
PWV closed.
SWV closed.
Choke 5 % open.

1. Note the THP at the swab cap.( indication of pressure below the UMV. )
2. Close the UMV. Close the hydraulic supply isolation valve at the Xmas tree, and select
open UMV again at the wellhead control panel. This will give an open indication although
the valve will still be closed, but the logic for the valve opening sequence will allow the
PWV to be opened.
3. Open the PWV.
4. Depressurise the flowline as previous via the PSV bypass to vent, close bypass valve on
completion. Note the time and pressure.
5. Monitor the pressure build up in the flowline for 30mins. Close the PWV after 30mins or if
the pressure exceeds 20bar. Note the time and pressure.

Note, as an alternative if time is short, after depressurising the flowline, close the
PWV which will leave just the small cavity between the UMV and the PWV to monitor
for a pressure build. Monitor this for 15mins. Note time and pressure on completion.
6. Slowly reopen the hydraulic isolation valves on the UMV, this will open the valve.

Part 4. Sub Surface Safety Valve integrity checks. ( SSSV)

Well status prior to integrity checks:-

SSSV open.
UMV open.Uper master walve.
PWV closed.Production Safety valve
SWV closed.
Choke closed

1. Open the test separator manifold valves.

2. Close the SSSV, allow a minimum of 3 mins. to fully close.
3. Isolate the hydraulic supplies on the control line the Xmas Tree to the SSSV, and select
open on the wellhead control panel for the SSSV. This will give an open indication for the
SSSV, although it will remain closed, the logic for the valve opening sequence will allow
the UMV & PWV to be opened.
4. Open the UMV and then the PWV, crack open the choke to depressurise above the SSSV to
the Test Separator.
5. Monitor the THP and as soon as the pressure equalises with the Test Separator, close the
choke and test manifold valves.
6. Open the flowline PSV bypass valve to the atmospheric vent.
7. Crack open the choke and continue to depressurise above the SSSV to atmosphere.

Monitor the PSV bypass pipework for temperature, this should not exceed –21degs.

OFFSHORE OPERATING PROCEDURE No. 3

Part 4. Sub Surface Safety Valve integrity checks. (SSSV cont’d)

1. Depressurise down to approx. 20bar and close the PSV bypass valve.
2. Close the PWV and note the time and THP pressure, monitor for 30mins. On completion
note time and THP.
3. Close the choke valve, UMV & select closed for the SSSV.
4. Reopen the hydraulic supply on the control line to the SSSV
5. Line up the well to the test or production manifolds for normal service as required.
6. Open the SSSV & UMV. Leave the PWV and choke closed leaving the well in the normal
standby position.
Note, the well will need 30mins. for the pressure to equalise across the SSSV before the
valve will be fully open, and ready for service.
7. Carry out a final check that all of the wellhead hydraulic systems are open to each Xmas
tree valve. With the hydraulic isolation valves tagged and heavy-duty tie wraps securing
the hand wheels. Confirm that the well is lined up to Production or the test manifold as
required.
