LUNG DISEASE

● Many different types of lung diseases

○ In general, all lung diseases affects the respiratory system
● In a healthy individual with a properly functioned respiratory
system:
○ Breathe in air containing oxygen and other gases into the lungs
○ In the lungs, oxygen moves into the bloodstream
○ Cells uses the oxygen and in return expels carbon dioxide
○ Carbon dioxide is then carried by the bloodstream back to the lungs
○ Exhale the carbon dioxide

Lung disease disrupts this process causing serious health problems

SYMPTOMS OF LUNG DISEASE

Warning signs:
1. Chronic coughing
2. Shortness of breath Talk to Your
3. Chronic mucus
production Doctor!
4. Wheezing
5. Coughing up blood
6. Chronic chest pain
CAUSES OF LUNG DISEASE

1. Tobacco Smoking
2. Outdoor air pollution
a. Smog
b. Particulate matter
3. Climate change
4. Indoor air quality
a. Radon
5. Obesity
TYPES OF LUNG DISEASE AND CONDITIONS:
There are lung diseases that affect parts and areas of the lung. These diseases
can affect the airways, air sacs, blood vessels, and more

Common lung diseases:

● Asthma
● Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
● Chronic bronchitis
● Tuberculosis
● Pneumonia
● Lung cancer
EFFECTS OF LUNG DISEASE ON LIFE

Lung diseases are seen to mainly affect your lung function which has
major effects on breathing.
The decreasing lung function that comes with lung diseases can also
have negative effects on the body’s ability to absorb oxygen.
This can have an impact on a variety of things such as:
● Levels of physical activity
● Ability to carry out specific daily tasks
● The duration that one can move or be active
HOW DOES SMOKING CONNECT TO LUNG DISEASE?

● Smoking can cause lung disease since it can damage one’s

airways and the air sacs found in the lungs
● COPD, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis are a few
common diseases that are caused by smoking
● Cigarette smoking has been seen to cause most cases of
lung cancer
● Those who smoke are about 12 times more likely to die from
lung disease compared to those who don’t smoke
LET’S TALK ABOUT COPD!
What is COPD?

Definition: COPD is a chronic inflammatory lung disease that

affects the airways and oxygen exchange
● There is no cure… however it is treatable and preventable!
● Sometimes referred to as chronic bronchitis and emphysema
● It can lead to long-term disability and even early death
○ Third leading cause of death by disease in the US
CAUSES of COPD

1. Smoking
a. Makes up 85-90 percent of all COPD cases
2. Environment
a. Air pollution
b. Secondhand smoking
3. Alpha-1 deficiency
a. Rare form of COPD called alpha-1-deficiency-related COPD
b. Genetic condition
i. Affects the body's ability to produce the protein, alpha-1
STAGES of COPD
GOLD criteria- grading system for classifying stages of COPD and evaluating the
treatments available
Stage 1: Mild, may have no symptoms or have SOB during light intensity
exercises
Stage 2: Moderate, may need short breaks during light-moderate intensity
exercise
Stage 3: Severe, experiences SOB during ADLs such as getting dress/undressing
Stage 4: Very Severe, may have lung/heart failure
SYMPTOMS of COPD

● Chronic cough
● Shortness of breath
● Fatigue
● Wheezing
● Producing a large amount of mucus
● Respiratory infections frequently
TREATMENT for COPD

Areas of treatment include

● Medications
● Supportive care
● Self-care
● Therapies
TIPS for improving your quality of life with COPD

These are lifestyle changes that can help to slow the progression
and alleviate the effects of COPD:
● Quit smoking
● Stay active and exercise
● Healthy diet
● Tracking
○ Doctor’s appointments, intake of medications, and changes in
symptoms
