ME304 FLUID MECHANICS
ASSIGNMENT 1 DUE DATE 30 NOVEMBER 2020
ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS
QUESTION 1
a) Briefly explain why fluid mechanics is very important in our daily lives. (2)
b) In a hydraulic system compressed air is used to lift a heavy load 148kN by exerting a
force on a small piston that has a circular cross-section with radius of 5.cm This
pressure is transmitted by a liquid to a piston that has radius of 15 cm:
i. Determine the air pressure that produces this force. (4)
ii. A 400mm x 750mm plate slide on oil whose dynamic viscosity is
𝛍=0.85Ns/m2 over a large surface. Calculate the force required to drag the
plate at a velocity of 1.2m/s if the thickness of the separating oil film is
0.6mm. (4)
c) Venturi Tubes can be used to measure the flow rate of fluids.
i) Give 4 typical examples of applications of venturi tubes that you know (2)

From Bernoulli’s equation P1/𝜌g +V 12 /2g + Z1 = constant Express the velocity V1 in

terms of Pressure differences ∆P and density 𝜌 of fluid flowing in a horizontal pipe.
(3)
The Venturi is being used as a suction device to introduce petrol into an air stream, as
in a carburettor in a car engine. Using continuity and Bernoulli's equation, estimate
the volume flow rate Q of air required before liquid is sucked into the airstream. (5)

Given that the diameter of the air duct at the throat of the venturi is 15 mm, expanding
to 30 mm at the exit into the atmosphere. The suction pipe exits to the air flow 150
mm above the surface of the liquid reservoir. The liquid fuel and air have densities of
800 kgm-3 and 1.2 kgm-3 respectively.
Question 2.
a) A farmer wants to draw water from a stream running down a hill behind his house at a
rate of 3 litres s-1. He as 30m of commercial steel tubing of inside diameter 30mm.
Calculate the total head ∆H. Given that e=0.045mm, kbent=0.34, kexit =1.0 (6)
b) Given that the water in question (2 a) above now has viscosity 𝛍 = 10-3 Pa s and flows
through a pipe of 5mm in diameter with mean velocity 0:2m/s. . State Hagen
Pouisellis Equation . Can the formula f = 16/Re be applied to calculate the friction
factor for this flow. Briefly explain why? (7)
c) Given that the pump must pump 1m3 of water per second to the height 10m trough a
pipe with cross section area 0.1m2. Assume constant friction coefficient f = 0:01 and
neglect all losses in fittings. Calculate the minimum head required to pump the water.
(7)

Question 3.
For the following pumping system

A tank 900mm square in plan is filled with water and is drained via a 60mm diameter pipe,
6m in length. The pipe has two bends along its length with head loss coefficient k=0.6 each
and for the entry of the pipe k= 0.5. The outlet of pipe is 230mm below the level of the tank
(Fig.Q5 above) The value of friction f=0.008 can be assumed.
a) What is the depth of water in the tank when the flow rate through the pipe is 7 liters per
second? (10)
b) How fast the pressure at the bottom of the tank changes for this value of h? (10)
