Here and elsewhere in the formatting guide you have a formatting choice.
Whatever choice you make, it MUST be reflected throughout the
ENTIRE document. CONSISTENCY is a requirement.
This Formatting Guide sets forth the thesis and dissertation requirements at NUST. Individual
departments or instructors may have additional requirements or may specify requirements in
greater detail. Consistency must be ensured and approved from advisors for these additional
requirements. The graduate student has a responsibility to learn what, if any, special
departmental/instructor requirements may apply. The thesis/dissertation should be prepared in
accordance with the instructions of this guide.

FYP Cover Page and Advisor Signature Page
A specimen of FYP Cover Page and Advisor Signature Page is given at Annex 1 and Annex 2
respectively. The guided formatting should be strictly followed.
Spacing and Margins
a. The abstract and the general text of the manuscript must be 1.5 line-spaced. Specimen is
given at Annex 3.
b. Table of Contents: Single space within chapters, double-space between chapters. Specimen is
given at Annex 4.

in engineering it is usually not the norm. Footnotes therefore should be avoided in the thesis and
dissertation.
Use of Reprints
Students using reprints of previously published copyrighted material must obtain permission
from the appropriate publisher/author.
Every thesis/dissertation is composed of three parts: preliminary pages, text, and reference
materials (i.e., appendices and bibliography)

TITLE: FORMATTING GUIDE FOR UG FYP
ABSTRACT
The National University of Sciences and Technology policy on Integrity of Scholarship is set
forth as per Higher Education Commission: “In the wake of fundamental improvements being
introduced in the system of Higher Education in Pakistan, the credit, respect, recognition of
research and scholarly publications, career development and financial gains are now linked with
such original works accomplished without replicating the efforts of other researchers.” It should
also be well known that “The principles of truth and honesty are recognized as fundamental to a
community of teachers and scholars….. No student shall claim or submit the work of another as
one's own.” These principles apply to the preparation of master's theses and doctoral
fulfillment of the requirements for a master's or doctoral degree, a student takes responsibility for
In view of above, plagiarism test must be conducted on the thesis/dissertation before it’s
Plagiarism policy can be downloaded for NUST or HEC website. A Certificate that thesis is
original and meets the HEC's plagiarism criteria be attached with original plagiarism report while

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
1.1 General
Light gauge steel construction is a practical alternative to lumber and conventional construction
mainly due to higher strength, ductility and light weight. Prevalent wood construction trends all
over the world are changing. Fluctuation in lumber prices, limited availability of old growth, and
pressure from environmentalists has compelled designers, developers and engineers to consider
other alternatives for all constructions.
The use of cold formed light gauge steel in construction of buildings started in around 1850 in
both United States and England, it gained popularity in 1940s. In Pakistan, this system found
favour as an attractive alternative to the conventional construction mainly because of increasing
demand of rapid and economical re-construction. It attracted more attention also due to its
beneficial properties like high strength to weight ratio, precise and thermally insulated building,
non-shrinkage, non-creeping and non-combustibility of members. Although this technology is
quite old in the rest of the world and a number of studies have been done on it, but it is an
emerging technology in Pakistan.
The extensive damage caused in the earthquake of Kashmir (2005) has demonstrated the
vulnerability of conventional construction. In the past, due to lack of knowledge and awareness,
buildings were built using stone or brick masonry without taking into account the essential
reinforcements required in case of catastrophes like earthquake etc. Although, with time and
awareness trends are changing but there is still a limit to which a building can be reinforced,
keeping costs in mind.
In light gauge steel construction all the structure is built using a limited number of sections as
shown in figure 1.1. These sections are made of galvanized iron steel and are cold formed into
the desired shape. In walls only the lipped C-section is used. In the prevailing system in Pakistan
there are two sizes available; 89S41 and 150S41.

Formating of figures and graphs in excel for use in thesis and presentation:
After drawing the graph on excel, Select the chart area → Format chart area → Border
Color and select no line.
There should not by any chart heading.
After that, Select the plot area → Format plot area → Border color and select solid line and
color must be black.
After that, Select the Axis one after another → Format axis (Do this for both the axis)
Select Axis option → major tick mark type → Select Outside.
Select Line color → Solid line with color black.
Select the chart and give it a Font size 12-point and Font ‘Arial’, keep font size in legend as
11.
There must not be any major or minor gridlines in any direction.
Select the Chart → Format option on the menu bar → size of chart must be 5.5” width and
3.5” height.
Strech and move the plot area to fit in nicely in the chart area
Select Axis Title, units must be inside brackets ( ) as shown in figure below e.g.
Temperature (°C), Stress (MPa) etc.
In axis format reduce number of decimel places to remove the noise from graph.
Select a trendline → Format Data series :
Marker options → Built-in , Use type/shape which is unique, size 6.
Marker Fill→ Solid fill, Color Black.
Line color→Solid→ Select Color Black.
Line style→ line width: 1.25 pt, Cap type: Square,Join type: Miter
Marker line color → No line (If marker is Solid fill) OR Solid line, Color Black (If
marker is No fill)
Marker line style (If marker is Solid fill) → Width : 0.5 pt → Cap type: Flat, Join type:
Round
If unfilled markers are used than marker outline can be kept. If filled markers are used
then no marker outline to be used.
Fig. 2 illustrates the sample of test data graph and shold be followed accordingly.
Annex 9
Font of the axis title can be italic only of showing ratios such as f′c,T/ f′c otherwise it
should not.
Line width 1.25,
Place the legends in the plot area of the graph at the topmost or bottom most corner of the
graph depanding upon the availability of the space.
When copy/paste the graph from excel to word, Copy the graph, paste option on word →
paste special → Picture (Enhanced Metafile).
The trendlines must be in color and properly formated. Select a single trendline at a time.
Select a trendline → Format Data series → Marker options → Type (Any) and Size (5 for
Square and 6 for others).
Marker Fill → Solid fill and Color must be the same as that of trendline.
Line Color → Solid fill and Color must be the same as that of marker.
Line Style → Width → 1.25 , Cap type → square, Join type → Miter, you can also
change the type of line by changing it on dash type.
Marker Line color → No line.
Perform all of these steps for all the trendlines in a single graph.
