Introduction
Formwork is the term given to either temporary or
permanent molds into which concrete or similar
materials are poured. In the context of concrete
construction, the falsework supports the shuttering
moulds.
The construction of formwork takes time and
involves expenditure upto 20 to 25% of the cost of
the structure or even more. Design of these
temporary structures are made to economic
expenditure. The operation of removing the
formwork is known as stripping. Stripped formwork
can be reused. Reusable forms are known as panel
forms and non-usable are called stationary forms.
Timber is the most common material used for
formwork. The disadvantage with timber formwork is
that it will warp, swell and shrink. Application of
water impermeable cost to the surface of wood
mitigates these defects. Hence PERI uses formwork
girders like VT20K and GT24 in place of timber
which are very nailable and have very high life.

What Is Formwork ?

Formwork is the term used for the process of creating a

temporary mould into which concrete is poured and
formed. Traditional formwork is fabricated using timber,
but it can also be constructed from steel, glass fiber
reinforced plastics and other materials.
While formwork is a broad term that is used in relation to
the forming process using a wide variety
of materials, shuttering is a term that is often used to refer
to the process of using plywood to form the mould.

Requirements Of Formwork
1. Strong enough to withstand dead and live loads.
2. Capable of retaining its shape by being efficiently
propped and braced horizontally and vertically.
3. Joints should prevent leakage of cement grout.
4. Should be capable of being removed in various parts
without damaging the concrete.
5. Material used be suitable for reuse.
6. Should be set accurately to the desired line.
7. As lightweight as possible.
8. Material should not warp or distort on exposure to
the elements.
9. Should rest on a firm base.

Types Of Formwork

1. Timber Formwork :-
The Timber formwork is one of the mostly used
in construction industry, fabricated on site using timber. It
is easy to produce but time-consuming for larger
structures. Plywood facing has a short lifespan. Timber is
easy to fix, remove and lightweight. Timber Shuttering is
most flexible type of shuttering; it can be used for any
shape and size.
Timber shuttering should satisfy the following
requirement:

1. Lightweight
2. Well-Seasoned
3. Free from termite attacks
4. Easily Workable

6 | Page
Advantages And Disadvantages Of
Timber Formwork :

Advantages of timber formwork :

1. Easy handling because it’s light weight.
2. Easy to disassemble.
3. Damaged parts can be replaced with new one.
4. Very flexible.

Disadvantages of timber formwork :

1. Can’t be used for long. Have limited re-use. Can only be
re-used 5 or 6 times.
2. If the timber is dry, it will absorb moisture from wet
concrete which could weaken the resultant concrete
member.
3. Timber with high moisture content (more than 20 %
moisture content), wet concrete will shrink & cup leading
to open joints & leakage of grout.

2. Steel Formwork :-

Steel formwork is also strong enough to withstand

the weight of larger amounts of concrete. While plywood
formwork may be appropriate for smaller projects, it may
not be able to withstand higher amounts of weight, thereby
leading to warping, splitting, cracking, or complete failure of
the form. Steel is mostly unyielding, and the concrete
generally will not adhere to the steel plates.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Steel
Formwork :

Advantages of steel formwork :

1. Very strong and able to carry heavy load.

2. Easy to be fixed.
3. Uniform size and surface.
4. Can be used for a very long time.

Disadvantages of steel formwork :

1. Limited size or shape.

2. Excessive loss of heat.
3. A very smooth surface will be produced which would
give problems for finishing process.

3. Aluminum Formwork :-

Aluminum Formwork System is a construction

system for forming cast in place concrete structure of a building.
It is also a system for scheduling and controlling the work of
other construction trades such as steel reinforcement, concrete
placement and mechanical and electrical conduits.
The System is fast, simple, adaptable and very cost effective. It
is unique because it forms all of the concrete in a building
including walls, floor slabs, columns, beams, stairs, window
hoods, balconies and various decorative features in exact
accordance with the architects' design.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of
Aluminum Formwork :
Advantages of Aluminum Formwork :

1. Produced according to the industrial standard,

stable quality.
2. Precise determination, high bearing capacity, relatively
stable concrete forming.
3. Skillful workers have high construction efficiency.
4. It can be equipped with a quick-release system, less on-site
garbage.
5. High recycling use rate, it can be recycled and refurbished.

Disadvantages of Aluminum Formwork :

1. High cost and the one-time investment is large. Even if it is

rented, the cost is high.
2. After the deformation, it is difficult to repair, generally, a
small deformation will lead to a large piece affected.
3. Workers must have corresponding construction techniques,
otherwise, the efficiency is low and the effect is poor.
4. Aluminum alloy surface and concrete are prone to
oxidative corrosion, resulting in bubbles affecting concrete
molding.

4. Plywood Formwork :-
Plywood formwork is a lightweight, durable and eco-
friendly system that provides high quality concrete cast
surface.
Usually, plywood boards are made of birch, poplar, spruce, or
pine but there are many types of materials used by plywood
manufacturers in different parts of the world. While the type of
plywood used is important, the real opportunity for making a
difference for the final concrete result is the type of coating:
the film that is applied on the plywood surface.

12 | P a g e
Advantages And Disadvantages Of
Plywood Formwork :

Advantages of Plywood Formwork :

1. Plywood has a reduced possibility to bend because odd
numbers of plies are attached maintaining balance inside
plywood.
2. The stiffness of plywood has made it hard to bend and
inflexible.
3. Plywood helps to contribute to the economy.
4. While solid wood is heavy, furniture made from plywood
are comparatively lighter to transfer.
5. Plywood has an ecological importance.

Disadvantages of Plywood Formwork :

1. Urea and phenol formaldehyde used for gluing causes
cancer.
2. Plywood is in many aspects weaker than wood.
3. Not durable like wood.
4. Not always easy to sculpture on this.
5. Lighter than normal wood.

13 | P a g e
5.Plastic Formwork :-
Formwork is an arrangement of wooden boards,
bolts, etc., used to shape reinforced concrete or similar
material while it is setting. It is also called as shuttering.
The formworks are made of wood or metal such as steel
or aluminum, but now a revolutionary material has taken
over- plastic. It comes in affordable cost and
environmentally friendly benefits.
There are various types of formworks. Apart from other
forms, Plastic formwork is very successful forms now-a-
days. Planning and material requirements are simplified
concreted.

14 | P a g e
Advantages And Disadvantages Of Plastic
Formwork :
Advantage of Plastic formworks :
 It can be used more than 100 times.
 The panels of this formwork are light weight,
sturdy and easier to handle and manage.
 It is easy to clean this form with water as the
concrete does not stick to it.
 Plastic formwork do not required shuttering oil as
the surface tension is low.

Disadvantages Of Plastic Formwork :

 Plastic is weak against heat.
 It is costly material.
 It does not take much load when compared with
others.

15 | P a g e
Conclusion

The formwork should be made with good quality

material and constructed properly. The type of material to
be used for formwork depends upon the nature of
construction as well as the availability and cost of
material. In constructing floor slab, we can use plywood
as shuttering instead of timber planks.
