The key takeaways are that multiple scientists over many years contributed evidence that led to the development of the cell theory.

These scientists provided evidence for the cell theory.

The microscope was necessary before the cell theory could be developed.

CELL THEORY TIMELINE

Student Procedures:

 Research the scientists below. List some of their contributions to science and
dates of these contributions. Refer to your notes and the scientist sheets provided.
o Robert Hooke
o Zacharias Janssen o Matthias Schleiden
o Anton van Leeuwenhoek o Theodor Schwann
o Rudolph Virchow
 Draw a timeline showing the chronological order of these scientists and their
contributions.
o Label the timeline with dates of the above scientists' discoveries.
o The earliest date should be on the left of the timeline and the most recent
date on the right. (1500 to 1900)
o Label each date with the corresponding scientist's name and
contribution(s) in an organized and legible manner.
o Be sure your spacing shows a reasonable approximation of the amount of
time elapsed between dates.

Famous Scientists

Scientist Year Discovery

Han & Zacharias Janssen 1595

Robert Hooke 1665

Hooke published a book called ‘’Micrographia’’
It was a record of his researches on insects with the
microscope
Anton van Leeuwenhoek 1680
He was elected to the royal society in London. And was
recognized as a true scientist

Matthias Schleiden 1838 In1838 he wrote the ‘’contribution to phythogenesis’’

Theodor Schwann 1839 Microscopical research on similarity in the structure and

growth of animal and plants

Rudolph Virchow 1855

Third point of cell theory :cell come from preexisting cells

All these events led to the realization of the cell theory.

The Cell Theory

1. All living bodies or organism are composed from one or more cells

2. The cell is the basic unit of structure and organization in organism

3. All cells come from preexisting cells that split and gave the same info to both new

cells.

Questions:

1. What theory did these scientists provide evidence for?

For the modern biology and the cell theory as we know it

2. What instrument was necessary before the cell theory could be developed?

The microscope was necessary

3. Which three scientists directly contributed evidence for the cell theory?

Virchow, Schlieden, Schwann

4. How did the earlier scientists and their contributions directly affect the discoveries of
later scientists? For example, what had to come first?

Janssen, he gave the instrument

5. List the three parts of the cell theory.

1. All living bodies or organism are composed from one or more cells

2. The cell is the basic unit of structure and organization in organism

3. All cells come from preexisting cells that split and gave the same info to both new

cells.

5. Explain how the invention of the microscope has helped our lives directly.

It heped us to discover new bacterias or diseases

Reflection (Criterion D)

2. How does development of the cell theory demonstrate “international collaboration”

among scientists? Write a well-developed paragraph to explain. (IB: One World)
