CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

This problem discusses the introduction, statement of the problem,

significant of the problem, scope and limitation of the study, definition of terms
and conceptual framework.

Introduction
Covid 19 caused by the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2 ) was generated in
December 2019 in Wuhan City in Hubei province of China and rapidly grow to
become deadly pandemic affecting much of Asia, Europe, America and Africa.
The Virus enters the body through the mouth ,nose and eyes (Ali and Alharbi
2020)

The outbreak of coronavirus disease-20191 (COVID-19) has severely

affected national and global economies. Various enterprises are facing different
issues with a certain degree of losses. Particularly, enterprises are facing a
variety of problems such as a decrease in demand, supply chain disruptions,
cancelation of export orders, raw material shortage, and transportation
disruptions, among others. Nevertheless, it is quite clear that enterprises around
the globe are experiencing the significant impact of COVID-19 outbreak on their
businesses. We argue that major victims of COVID-19 outbreak are the micro,
small & medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) because MSMEs, in comparison to
large enterprises, usually do not possess sufficient resources, especially financial
and managerial, and are not prepared for such disruptions likely to go longer
than expected (Bartik et al., 2020; Prasad et al., 2015). Additionally, these firms

_____
are highly dependent on their routine business transactions and a small number
of customers (Williams & Schaefer, 2013). Hence, many MSMEs are running out
of stock, some hardly continue to operate, and some will be running out of stock
soon.

Moreover , Dontho and Gustaffson (2020) pointed out that Coronavirus is

a sharp reminder that pandemics ,like rarely occurring catastrophe s ,have
happened in the past and will happen in the future .even if we cannot prevent
dangerous viruses from emerging ,we should prepare to damper their affects on
society. The current outbreak had a severe economic consequence across the
globe and it does not like any country will be unaffected .This not only has
consequence in the economy; all society is affected which has led to the changes
in how business act and consumers behave.

Small firms, due to resource constraints, weaker market positioning, and

other factors, may be more vulnerable to crisis events. However, SMEs may
have advantages as flexibility, learning capabilities, innovation, customer
relations (Herbane et. Al 2006).

According to Fairlie (2020) Social distancing restrictions and demand

shifts from COVID-19 are expected to shutter many Small businesses, The

number of active business owners in the United States plummeted by 3.3 million
or 22 percent over the crucial two-month window from February to April 2020.
The drop in business owners was the largest on record, and losses were felt
across nearly all industries and even for incorporated businesses.
