INTRODUCTION
When I started to work at the office it was very difficult for me to join in with the office
environment, because I have never experienced a position where multiple people work in the same
project, but thanks to the workers and my mentor it took me 2 to 3 days to communicate and start
working as a part of the office.
The first project I was assigned to was Belgium embassy site and i was kind of shocked because it
was a large-scale project but after a couple of days, I understood the work flow and started to get
along with the co-workers and the architects.
Even though I was in a whole new environment, I was being given an opportunity to implement
what i was thought in the past couple of years and what was even better was I was there to learn
and that made the whole internship an interesting journey.
I had confusion a little to decide where to work, I was told about Abba by a friend of me about the
projects they did and the level of the firm so I was interested by it.
My one complaint was that I couldn’t be able to design one project or full project by myself. Any
way I went to the office and I was interviewed like a normal job interview and also submitted my
portfolio.
On the interview day I was asked to present 2 of my best design project to check my skill and
design technics then they were pleased to take me and told me that they will call after they arrange
a space for me to start the internship.
Above all the reasons that forced me to select the site for my internship are;
1) Since the company is broad and has many work departments believing that, I will get hold of
a variety of knowledge.
2) The suitability of the place in terms of transportation and fulfillment of some materials, which will
help me during the internship.
So, finally the supervisor txt me that I passed the interview and accepted me as an internship student
and making an agreement on October 01 /2019, I started my internship.

When I started my internship, the progress of Belgium embassy was 20% and many
buildings including chamber of commerce.
As I started my job the first task which I performed was to set out my own training schedule
because since the work sector is broad to gather all knowledge, skill and experience proper use of
time is must.
And also to install the latest version of Revit set up cause to simply share file, import and have a
common Revit version with everyone in the office.
Among the different working sections of the company, I have been working in the design
section. But unfortunately all the project I have participated had undergoes 20 percent which
means conceptual designing and 3d designing had been done well before I was there so my job was
to help the rest designing and landscape designing.
My task in there were to design a given projects that might be site design, any detail designing or
function arrangement/material specifying and preparing working drawings.
We have a direct contact with our supervisor and manager in any circumstances. And we also have
indirect contact with the client. Our connection with the clients could be on modifying projects. On
this section almost all the project will be to modified and detailed.
We have to give the preliminary designs for our advisor where he can show to clients and receive
additional comment for modification. On this progress the main work is respecting building
regulation and deciding the main building form with its corresponding programs.
The next is drafting section. When the design passes its preliminary stage it’s passed to the
draft persons. The office has its own standard presentation format. They will take the drawing and
convert it to this format.
On this step the drawing will be ready for plotting, and my job here would be modifying the
drawings by changing simple errors or giving suggestion without changing some mandatory parts
of the design unless it’s a must, and making them ready for this stage.

I have been also working on the site work and I take some leacture on the office. Most of
the time I spent on concentrating construction work execution at the site.
Site work:- There were various kinds of work trades. These are reinforcement bar work, formwork,
concrete work, HCB wall laying, plastering work, slab work, beam and column, electrical work,
sanitary work, trench, pit, septic excavation work, masonry work, hardcore, setting out and
backfill and compaction. Firstly I watched out their work procedures step by step with comparing
my theoretical knowledge that I gained in school. After I developed my practical skill, I acted as
site engineer, Forman, and technical worker for following above most kinds of trade works.
He ignores the unwanted and adds some feature and their own touch. Depending on the size of the
project, then there will discussion and consultations on the design periodically. Then the design
will on a wide way road Architects and intern start working on it detail.

This was almost done except for some schedule and I had the
chance to participate in window and door schedules, also
some modification on the toilet of some floor. The door and
the window were done on the plan after I finished the
schedule and after that I merge them with the project. This
was so tiring and redundant work but finally I had grasped a
lot of knowledge from it and I am grateful for it. My
supervisor Zacharias was so helpful by giving me insight
about the project so it was a learning process.

First understanding the supervisor workin idea then try to collaborate with the working projects, if
the project is on preliminary stage participating in every conceptual or theoretical designing process.
If not asking and understanding other architectural drawing process.
Second consulting and modifying working project in order to upgrade different aspects. Team
working if it is a larger project and designing details to communicate with engineers another section
of the company.
My Performance in my Work
Beside the performance indicated on monthly evaluation paper, I can humbly and honestly discuss
my performance. I have tried hard to give my works architectural quality. The major complains I
have heard was about time and my speed.
Challenge
The main challenge I have faced was the office silence. Usually when u get in to office it look like
students taking exam….It is very difficult to talk in that silent space cause it seems like everyone
could hear you so we all talk whisperly.at first I couldn’t stand it but after a few weeks later I just
adapted the environment none of us talk unless for consulting or taking work to do. Once you got
something to do its good for engrossment and privacy work but hard to communicate and
frustrating.
This challenge can’t be altered cause its formerly the behavior of the company so it can’t be done
nothing except exercising yourself to adapt.
Other than this the major challenges while performing the tasks
are;
At first my software skill, techniques and speed of work was slow because I was trying so hard to be
precise and since it was a new environment too. After a few days I have increased my speed of work
with accuracy I was able to adapt and work efficiently than the previous days.

Ever since I took the first step into the office space, it was clear that this is no ordinary office.
Everyone is clearly situated within their designated spaces with their assigned roles and tasks, and
amidst the silence, where the only audible voice is your own thoughts, it is pretty easy to ponder
the ins and outs of your architectural practice and the life of architectural profession as a whole.
For the first few weeks, communication with the rest of the staff was quite cold. Exchange of ideas
was rigid, and was limited to communicating assigned tasks. If it weren’t for my fellow students
from campus whom I had known since before the internship period, it would’ve been very easy to
feel alienated within this space.
On the bright side however, I am glad to say that I was prepared for any professional task that had
been sent my way through this introductory period, so I am grateful to say I made it through
without much difficulty, at least professionally.
After all the interns from all the different schools and different regions have been assembled, we
gathered in a meeting hall to discuss the possible outcomes of our internship, what we had
expected, what we have learned so far or at least estimated and what we would like the Internship
period to look like from that point onwards. That was quite a reflective moment for me, speaking
personally, because it acted as a bridge to get to know some of the staff members and the cold
introductory period was now over.
Then once the gaps began being bridged, new faces within the office space started to appear. Not
that they weren’t there before, but that they were now engaged with us in a way that we are able
to exchange ideas and share experiences with them. This was particularly useful with the senior
members of staff. Who gave us an in-depth analysis of the workings of architectural practice. The
benefits of consulting a senior member are many, it starts by letting you know where you are as an
architect and what is expected from you. Then it goes to highlight what the future holds for you
and what you should expect.

I have gained many technical skill, design methods, knowledge of working in working drawing
This goes to show that in an ever-changing world, one has to keep updating him or herself to keep
up with the newest technologies and advancements that have been made in the field. This is not
just graphically; it could be in terms of understanding construction terminologies and techniques,
such as sustainable design for instance, a skill that is proving to be more and more crucial
nowadays.
B) Landscape features
C)Tradition
D) Sustainability
This design principle was set out based on the principle that, for there to be an order in the
urban landscape, every time a new building is built, it should be in consideration of the existing
elements on site and pay its respects to these site elements.
In this internship practice almost everything I have done in the office is the same as what we did in
the design class. Except there is a collaboration between architects and other engineers, for
example I have noticed that there was a great collaboration between one lead architect and the
landscape architect so I have been focusing on gathering information on how architects
collaborate with each other and solve problem, from this I was able to learn that an architect
doesn’t have to work alone.
In addition to this the office also try to make clear some office working style by giving lecture
according to attitude and practicing architecture using of theoretical structural knowledge. So in
general specially in improving the new work word, terms, method of work and method of
calculation in which I had having blared (unclean) image was solved and I had now match the
theoretical knowledge with practical one.

And the most important thing that I grasped from my intern program is how to work with My
supervisors, how to consult them and how to learn new things. While doing our Job as an architect
we considered things that could affect a work of others in the field. We learned to discuss with
others before deciding things since it’s a team work.
Leadership skills
Leadership in a certain construction project is flowing smoothly from group leader to project
manager. Taking responsibilities and taking leads are the other skills we practiced at the office.
Effective leaders must be aware of their values, morals, and system of ethics and ethical decision
making. Leadership is the process of influencing individuals or groups to accomplish an
organizational goal or mission.
Finally, I am able to realize that leadership is a process. To be an effective leader one must
continually exercise good leadership skills. One does not need to be perfect but should always
strive to apply good leadership characters to our leadership skills which are mentioned below.
35 | P a g e

ADIGRAT UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY
DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE
- Respect - treating other as you wish to be treated, in addition to being courteous, listening to
others, and accepting individual differences
- Fairness - playing by the rules, not taking advantage of others, making informed judgments
without favoritism or prejudice, and not blaming others
- Caring - kindness, compassion, and altruism, acting to minimize hardship and to help others
whenever possible.
- Citizenship - working to make our community better, protecting the environment, making our
democratic institutions work, and operating within the law
To be an effective leader one must continually exercise good leadership skills. I have exercise
leadership skills, especially the sense of responsibility, self-confidence and conceptualizing while
giving directions.
Especially in a firm I had been working with, I was a leader to myself. Being a leader, I tried to do
my work at the best of me. What I gained in terms of leadership skills
Working Ethics
Work ethics are code of conducts that a person should behave to make peaceful, productive
efficient work environment. Being out in the offices, in the real working world in order to make
great change, one has to work hard, by being punctual and fully engaged in his/her own work. It
is a must that one should get to work on time and use his time wisely, Learning courses relating to
professionalism really helped us. Since we have learned so many ethical rules and regulation we
were really careful not to break those regulations.
The following are some of the common professional work ethical principles what I gained in the
internship period..
36 | P a g e

Punctuality- means keeping the companies work beginning and ending time and to
complete a given task within the given period.
Reliability- The worker should be qualified for the part he is supposed to be performing . He/she
must have appropriate skill and knowledge for the task assigned.
Honesty:- Regarding this value each worker regardless of its status should abstain from bad
behaviors such as cheating , bias , corruption etc..
Cooperation:- Each worker should interact and cooperate with each other while working . That
is because it is through such system problems could be easily solved.
Accountability:- being responsible person & held accountable for what you do.
Entrepreneurship Skills
This is one of the main benefits that I got from the internship program because now I had better
understanding than previous.
- Since I know more about my profession (such as challenges and solutions, decision making
ability, ways of business establishment, work management, etc) I am able to think to be
entrepreneur rather than employer.
- The main things that I need to be entrepreneur are deep knowledge about the work that I do
good working habit, good approach to peoples and ability to make final decisions.
- Knowledge of what professional works are available in the sector for architects as business
persons.
- Knowledge of the existing working firms in some portions of the city and future ideas on new use
of technology and techniques.
Once one achieves this however, the recommendations are that he takes the high road and avoids
selfish motives during his work. Typically, a commission is gained by means of
A) Merit
B) Word of Mouth
C) Bidding

The recurring theme of the office is that the seniors understand that the individual has
his earthly needs for fiscal compensation and independently maneuvering their own private
business. But they always insist on working with the company until they have enough experience
and the knowhow to actually be able to take care of a project by themselves.
This capability, they believe, is gained through experience. Since being accustomed to all the
different bylaws, standards and technical specifications is not something we gain with one night of
study, rather by years of application and practice until the principles sink in.
The most reliable means of job acquisition is by networking. This comes in many forms and
types, it could be circular, linear etcetera. Once this networking is achieved and clients are signed
in, the advice that we got was to pay just as much as necessary. Reward those deserving and
withhold from spending on things that aren’t necessary, and those who haven’t earned the
compensation.
Ethics is also a crucial factor in entrepreneurship, because in entrepreneurship, the key factor
behind success is passion and drive. This is only achieved by working for the pure purpose of soul
satisfaction and leaving things such as merit and fiscal compensation aside.

Conclusion
This internship period helped me in grasping the skills which are necessary to be a professional
architect. During this internship I got a chance to observe and practice many architectural
activities. Besides observing, I was able to implement what I learned in several projects. and above
all I have learned that I should have the following qualities, in addition to the technical skill and
academic knowledge:
- Being sociable
- Being responsible
But it also thought me that there are a lot of things left to learn in the coming times but nothing
will discourage me from what is about to come. Learning that the road a head will be getting
harder will help me prepare for every step I take and every turn I take.
In general, my overall understanding about the architecture field of study has been magnified
throughout my five months stay in the office. Being able to work with highly experienced and
talented architects and engineers has given me extra knowledge to be able to be competent in
the professional world. Aside from the experience I obtained regarding the discipline I also
learned about basic work principles and work ethics.
As a student of architecture I found the internship program very useful for my professional career
in giving me an outlook about the responsibilities that are expected from me when I become a
graduate architect in contributing and giving out my best to fill the gap that is formed in the
Architecture of Ethiopia. The two architects and the structural engineer have been supportive in
introducing me to the practical world of architecture and building construction.
They were also helpful in guiding me in the direction what will familiarize me with their way of
practicing of architecture, their styles and personal interests. Besides gaining all these experience
with these professionals I also learned the value of hard work and ethical discipline from them.

Finally, I can conclude that with in the 4 months of work experience I have gotten plenty
knowledge and skills. Such as Management skills – the ability to manage time and people (both
oneself and others) successfully,
Communication skills (e.g. the ability to sell ideas and persuade others) , The ability to work both
as part of a team and independently, Able to plan work schedule , coordinate and organize
effectively, Self-motivated and disciplined, Adaptable to the work environment and new features,
An Innovative and creative thinker,
The ability to multi-task , Able to take responsibility and make decisions, The ability to work under
pressure, Perseverance ,Competitiveness, Willingness to take risks(or at least not risk averse) ,
ability to network and make contacts and so on.

Recommendations
During my internship yime at the company, I have observed some problem that I would like yo
point out, concerning on different aspect some are
I highly recommend my hosting company to use powerful computer and a server integrated
network, because when I have been working there, it was hard passing around files since every one
used personal mobile computers and it was hard to render projects because all of the workers
didn’t have computers powerful enough to support the rendering software.
I highly recommend getting a tower computer so that the whole office can render faster and more
often. What would be even better is if the tower was available for everyone through a network
system then all of the workers could share files and back up company data in the office.
My recommendation for the company is to keep the good work up. In addition, I suggest opening
additional branches, additional advertisements and preparing a catalog, which can show some
