diameter to which it is rigidly joined at each end. If at a temperature of 10 there is no longitudinal
stress, calculate the stresses in the rod and tube when the temperature is raised to 200 . Take E for
the steel and copper as 2.1 x 10 5 N/mm2 and 1 x 105 N/mm2 respectively. The value of coefficient of
linear expansion of steel and copper is given as 11 x 10 -6 per and 18 x 10-6 per respectively.

4 A simply supported beam of length 10 m carries the uniformly distributed load 10 kN/m and two point
loads 50 kN and 40 kN at 4m apart from a distance of 4 m from the right end. Draw the S.F and B.M
diagrams for the beam. Also calculate the maximum bending moment.

5 A horizontal beam 10 m long is carrying a uniformly distributed load of 1 kN/m. The beam is supported
on two supports 6 m apart. Find the position of the supports, so that B.M on the beam is as small as
possible. Also draw the S.F and B. M diagrams.

7 An I – section beam 350 mm x 150 mm has a web thickness of 10 mm and flange thickness of 20 mm.
If the shear force acting on the section is 40 kN, find the maximum shear stress developed in the
I –section. Sketch the shear stress distribution across the section.

8 Derive an expression for the shear stress produced in a circular shaft which is subjected to torsion.
What are the assumptions made in Torsion?

9 A beam of length 6 m is simply supported at its ends and carries two point loads of 48 kN and 40 kN at
a distance of 1 m and 3 m respectively from the left support. Find (i) Deflection under each load (ii)
Max deflection and (iii) The point at which max deflection occurs. Take E = 2 x 10 5 N/mm2 and
= 85 x 106 mm4.
UNIT - V
10 A spherical vessel 2.5 m diameter is subjected to an internal pressure of 42 N/mm 2. Find the thickness
of the plate required if max stress is not to exceed 250 N/mm 2 and joint efficiency is 75%.

(ii) Hoop stress induced. Take E = 200 GPa and Poisson ration = 0.3.

11 In a hydraulic press, the cylinder has an internal diameter of 30 cm; the cylinder has to withstand an
internal pressure of 10 MPa, without the material being stressed beyond 20 MPa. Determine the
thickness of the metal and the stress on the outer surface of the thick cylinder.

5 (a) Obtain the relation between transverse force, shear force and bending moment at a section of a beam.

8 (a) Write torsion equation and its assumptions.
(b) A circular shaft of 25 mm diameter is tested under torsion. The gauge length of the specimen is 250 mm.
The torque of 2.12 kN/m produces an angular twist. Determine the modulus of rigidity of the shaft.

9 Determine the value of EIδ midway between the supports for the beam shown:
10 A pipe carrying steam at 3.5 MPa has an outside UNIT – Vdiameter of 450 mm and a wall thickness of 10 mm.
A gasket is inserted between the flange at one end of the pipe and a flat plate used to cap the end. How
many 40 mm diameter bolts must be used to hold the cap on if the allowable stress in the bolts is
80 MPa, of which 55 MPa is the initial stress? What circumferential stress is developed in the pipe? Why
is it necessary to tighten the bolt initially and what will happen if the steam pressure should cause the
stress in the bolts to be twice the value of the initial stress?

11 (a) Derive Lame’s equation.
(b) Show the distribution of radial and circumferential stresses for boundary conditions of 50 MPa at Outer
radius of 10 mm and 30 MPa at inner radius of 5 mm of cylinder 5 mm thick.

(b) Find the young’s modulus of a brass rod of diameter 25 mm and of length 25 mm, which is subjected to a
tensile load of 50 kN when the extension of the rod is equal to 0.3 mm.

3 A 10 mm diameter steel bar of length 150 mm is stressed by a weight of 120 kN dropping freely through 20
mm before commencing to stretch the bar. Find the max instantaneous stress and the elongation produced
in the bar. Take E = 2 x 105 N/mm2.
UNIT - II
4 A beam of span L, simply supported at its ends is loaded with distributed load which varies parabolically
from zero at each end to a max at the mid span. Taking the span equal to 4 m and the value of total load
equal to 6000 N, plot the S.F and B.M diagrams, indicating the principal values.
OR
5 A horizontal beam AD 10 m long carries a uniformly distributed load of 160 N/m together with a
concentrated load of 400 N at the left end A. The beam is supported at a point B which is 1m from A and at
C which is on the right hand, half of the beam and ‘x’ m from the end D.
Determine the value of x, if the midpoint is a point of contra flexure and for this arrangement draw S.F &
B.M diagrams.

6 A cast iron test beam 20 mm x 20 mm in section and 1m long and supported at ends fails when a
concentrated load of 640 N is applied. What uniformly distributed load will break a cantilever of the same
material 50 mm wide, 100 mm deep and 2 m long?

7 Show that for a rectangular section of the max shear stress is 1.5 times the average shear stress.

8 Prove that deflection at the centre of a simply supported beam, carrying a point load at the centre is given
by yc = WL3/48EI.

9 Determine the angle of twist and max shear stress developed in a shaft which tapers uniformly from a
diameter of 160 mm to a diameter of 240 mm. The length of the shaft is 2 m and transmits a torque of 48
kNm. Take the value of modulus of rigidity for the material as 80 GN/m 2.

10 (a) Derive an expression for circumferential stress and longitudinal stress for a thin cylinder.
(b) A cylinder of internal diameter 3.0 and of thickness 6 cm contains gas. If the tensile stress in the materials is
not exceed 70 N/mm2, determine the internal pressure of the gas.

11 Find the thickness of a metal necessary for a cylindrical shell of internal diameter 160 mm to withstand an
internal pressure of 8 N/mm2. The max hoop stress in the section is not to exceed 35 N/mm 2.

2 A compound tube consists of a steel tube 140 UNIT

–I diameter and 160 mm external diameter and an
outer brass tube 160 mm internal diameter and 180 mm external diameter. The two tubes are of the same
length. The compound tube carries an axial load of 900 kN. Find the stresses and the load carried by each
tube and the amount it shortens. Length of each tube is 140 mm. Take E for steel as 2 x 10 5 N/mm2 and for
brass as 1 x 105 N/mm2.

3 The stresses at a point in a bar are 200 N/mm 2 (tensile) and 100 N/mm2 (compressive). Determine the
resultant stress in magnitude and direction on a plane inclined at 60° to the axis of the major stress. Also
determine the maximum intensity of shear stress in the material at the point.

4 Draw the shear force and bending moment diagram for a simply supported beam of length 9m and carrying
a uniformly distributed load of 10 kN/m for a distance of 6 m from the left end. Also calculate the maximum
bending moment on the section.

5 Draw the shear force and bending moment diagram for overhanging beam carrying uniformly distributed
load of 2 kN/m over the entire length and a point load of 2 kN as shown in figure. Locate the point of
contraflexure.

7 The shear force acting on a section of a beam is 50 kN. The section of the beam is of T-shaped of
dimensions 100 mm x 100 mm x 20 mm as shown in figure. The moment of inertia about the horizontal
neutral axis is 314.221 x 104 mm4. Calculate the shear stress at the neutral axis and at the junction of the
web and the flange.
UNIT – IV
8 Determine the diameter of a solid shaft which will transmit 300 kW at 250 r.p.m. The maximum shear stress
should not exceed 30 N/mm2 and twist should not be more than 1° in a shaft length of 2 m. Take modulus of
rigidity = 1 x 105 N/mm2.

9 A beam ABC of length 9 m has one support at the left end and the other support at a distance of 6 m from
the left end. The beam carries a point load of 12 kN at right end and carries a uniformly distributed load of
4 kN/m over a length of 3 m as shown in figure. Determine the slope and deflection at point C.
UNIT – V
10 A boiler shell is to be made of 15 mm thick plate having a limiting tensile stress of 120 N/mm 2. If the
efficiencies of the longitudinal and circumferential joints are 70% and 30% respectively. Determine: (i) The
maximum permissible diameter of the shell for an internal pressure of 2 N/mm 2. (ii) Permissible intensity of
internal pressure when the shell diameter is 1.5m.

UNIT – I
2 A compound bar consists of a central steel strip 40 mm wide and 5 mm thick placed between two strips
of brass each 40 mm wide and x mm thick. The strips are firmly fixed together to form a compound bar
of rectangular section 40 mm wide and (2x + 5mm) thick. Take: E s = 207 GN/m2 and Eb = 114 GN/m2.
Determine: (i) The thickness of the brass strips which will make the apparent modulus of elasticity of the
compound bar equal to 160 x 10 3 MN/m2. (ii) The maximum axial pull the bar can then carry if the stress
is not to exceed 160 MN/m2 in either the brass or the steel.
OR
3 The principal tensile stresses at a point across two perpendicular planes are 120 MN/m 2 and 60 MN/m2.
Find: (i) The normal and tangential stresses and the resultant stress and its obliquity on a plane 20° with
the major principal plane. (ii) The intensity of stress which acting along can produce the same maximum
strain. Take poisson’s ratio = 1/4.
UNIT – II
4 Draw the shear force and bending moment diagram for a simply supported beam shown in figure below.
Also calculate the maximum bending moment on the section.

5 A beam ABC is loaded and supported as shown in figure. Find the magnitude of the clockwise moment
M to be applied at C so that the reaction at B will be 30 kN upward and then draw the shear force and
bending moment diagram for the beam.

6 Figure shows a T-beam (120 mm Deep) used as a beam with simply supported ends, so that the flange
comes under tension. The material of the beam can be subjected to 75 Mn/m 2 in compression and 25
MN/m2 in tension. It is desired to achieve a balanced design so that the largest possible bending
stresses are reached simultaneously. Find: (i) The width of the flange. (ii) The magnitude of the
concentrated load that can be applied to the beam at its centre if the span length is 6 metres.

7 A T-shaped cross section of a beam shown in figure is subjected to a vertical shear force of 100 kN.
Calculate the shear stress at the neutral axis and at the junction of the web and the flange. Moment of
inertia about the horizontal neutral axis is 0.0001134 m4.
UNIT – IV
8 A hollow steel shaft is made to replace a solid wrought iron shaft of the same external diameter, the
material being 35 percent stronger than the iron. Find what fraction of the outside diameter, the internal
diameter may be. Also, neglecting the coupling, find the percentage saving in weight by the substitution,
assuming that steel is 2 percent heavier than wrought iron.

9 A beam AB of 4 metres span is simply supported at the ends and is loaded as shown in figure.
Given: E = 200 x 106 kN/m2, and I = 20 x 10-6 m4. Determine: (i) Deflection at C. (ii) Maximum deflection.
(iii) Slope at the end A.

10 A cylindrical vessel whose ends are closed by means of rigid flange plates is made of steel plate 3 mm
thick. The internal length and diameter of vessel are 50 cm and 25 cm respectively. Determine the
longitudinal and circumferential stresses in the cylindrical shell due to an internal fluid pressure of
3 MN/m2. Also calculate increase in length, diameter and volume of the vessel.
