    The king and queen of Majapahit fled with their daughter Roro Anteng and her husband Joko Seger to Mount Bromo after their kingdom was attacked. They established the village of Tengger but remained unhappy without children. Joko Seger prayed to God on the volcano and was promised children if they sacrificed the last one. They had 25 children but struggled to sacrifice the last, Kusuma, and the volcano erupted, swallowing him. The family was told further sacrifices were needed, establishing the Kasada festival still held today.

    The Legend of Bromo

    A long time ago, Majapahit was attacked by Islam Kingdom. The king and his followers,
    moved to Bali and East Java. The king’s daughter (Roro Anteng) and her husband (Joko Seger)
    also evacuated to Mount Bromo in Java. They ruled the region and named the village “Tengger”.
    Teng from Anteng and Ger from Seger.

    After many years, roro anteng and joko seger was unhappy because they had no children.
    Then, Joko Seger climbed the volcano. He mediated and prayed to God.

    God heared the prayer. God will gave them children, but Joko Seger and roro anteng
    must sacrifice their last child. After that, roro anteng got pregnant and they have a baby.

    After many years, they had 25 children. Joko Seger and roro anteng was very happy. The
    family lived with a full of love and happiness. But, then joko seger remembered about
    conversation among him and God. He must sacrifice the last child.

    Joko seger and roro anteng loved the last child so much. It was hard. They planned to
    break the agreement with God. They didn’t keep their promises.

    Suddenly, Bromo was shake and Kusuma was lost. He swallowed to crater of the
    mountain. Then, a voice says that the family must do sacrifice to save their life. After that,
    Kusuma’s brothers and sisters always do sacrifice and named it “Kasada”. Kasada is still held
    until now.
