2. Intercultural Communication
Content Standard: The learner understands the nature and elements of oral communication in context.
Performance Standard: The learner designs and performs effective controlled and uncontrolled oral communication activities based on context.
Specific Learning Outcomes: At the end of the lesson, the learner will be able to;
1. Explain the nature and process of communication;
2. Explain why there is a breakdown of communication;
3. Apply strategies in overcoming communication breakdowns;
4. Practice effective communication skills;
5. Evaluate the effectiveness of an oral communication;
6. Practice learning and thinking skills, life skills and ICT literacy;
7. Demonstrate effective intercultural communication skills in a speech situation;
8. Develop appreciation for different cultural perspectives; and
9. Practice effective intercultural communication.

Time Allotment: 4hours
Teaching – Learning Activities
Introduction The students will play charade to elicit the importance of effective communication and to practice effective intercultural communication.
Motivation The students will provide feedbacks based on the given task about effective communication and to practice effective intercultural
communication.
Instruction/Delivery The students will critique two videos. The first video shows the non-effective and cultural bias speaker while the second video shows the
effective and cultural sensitive speaker. Then, the teacher will further explain the fundamentals of communication and the definition and
importance of cross-cultural communication, cross cultural risk, ten (10) precautions in cultural communication and skills to overcome
differences.
Practice 1. The students will perform a five-minute presentation of their favorite scenes from an English movie, TV series, or musical or non-musical
stage play.

3. The students will watch two TV commercials and will share their insights about cultural sensitivity.

2. Demonstrates politeness and openness as they participate in the assigned communicative context both in written and oral form; and
3. Applies all the functions in communication as they participate in the panel discussion.

Teaching – Learning Activities


Introduction The class will discuss the assignment as a review of the previous lesson. Then, students will watch a video clip for think-pair-share activity.
After that, students will share their observations.
Motivation The teacher will present sample of print ads. Students will analyze the message and its purpose. Then, the teacher will process the feedback
given by the students.
Instruction/Delivery Using Socratic questioning the teacher facilitates the discussion of the functions of communication using the two previous activities as a spring

Practice The students will select an issue from the pictures presented by the teacher. Then, they will conduct a panel discussion on the various aspects of
the issue. After each presentation, an open forum will be conducted.
Enrichment Each student composes a one-minute paper indicating his/her observations regarding the strengths and weaknesses of each speaker.
Evaluation Based on their one-minute paper, the students write a 250-word essay of his/her objective observation and evaluation of the various speakers
watched and listened to.
Topic/Lesson: Speech Styles
Content Standard: Recognizes that communicative competence requires understanding of speech context, speech style, speech act and communicative strategy.
Performance Standard: demonstrates effective use of communicative strategy in a variety of speech situations.
Specific Learning Outcomes: At the end of the lesson, the learner will be able to;
1. Distinguishes types of speech style
2. Identifies social situations in which each speech style is appropriate to use
3. Observes the appropriate language forms in using a particular speech style
4. Appreciate the value of tactfulness in communication.

Teaching – Learning Activities
Introduction A video presentation containing one of the speeches of Miriam Defensor Santiago then the students will give share their observations.
Motivation What’s the Event? - The teacher will present different kinds of texts/situations, then the students will also present their observation from the
given texts by the teacher. Observation from the texts, its contents, and the way how the texts are presented.
Instruction/Delivery An excerpt from Pres. Rodrigo Duterte’s speech on Covid -19,will present by the teacher to be examine by the students.
Practice Noticeably Different- Using the Venn diagram, the students are directed to write the differences and similarities of the different speech styles.
Enrichment Let’s Talk – Given are five social relationships, then the students will choose one and think of social situation and they will decide which speech
style is appropriate to use and create a dialogue using the appropriate forms or vocabulary.
Evaluation Creative Mind- Imagine the given-real world situation. Think creatively on how to convince the persons concerned effectively.

Teaching – Learning Activities
Introduction Identifying the Speech Style- memory test-Let us test your memory if you could still remember the previous lesson by answering the activity
below.
Motivation Say What You Mean- The teacher will present a short conversation between the two SHS students. Then, the students will write something
about their observation in the presented conversation.
Instruction/Delivery Go back to the speech style and speak context as just two parts of communicative strategy, present the new lesson (Types of Speech Acts) as
the third prerequisite.
Practice Speak and Act- How do the students cope with lesson? Brainstorm on the given situation.
Enrichment Probing Questions- Based on the speak and act activity the students will answer three different situations.
Evaluation Let Us Write- Write a short skit for each given situation showing how you will approach the people involved and what will you say to them.
