Subject: CRIM 6 Section: BSCRIM E2018

Pick a famous politician, business leader, or celebrity who has been arrested
recently.
Based on a News Release published by Los Angeles County District
Attorney’s Office last October 8, 2020, Tory Lanez, a rap musician, has been
accused of assaulting a female acquaintance in the Hollywood Hills early this year,
according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. Daystar Peterson
(dob 7/27/92) was charged today in case BA490599 with one felony count each of
assault with a semiautomatic weapon - personal use of a firearm - and carrying a
loaded, unlicensed firearm in a vehicle. The defendant is also accused of using a
firearm and inflicting serious bodily harm on himself. His arraignment is set on
October 13 at Foltz Criminal Justice Center Department 30. The case is being
prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Kathy Ta of the Family Violence Division. On
July 12, the defendant and the 24-year-old victim were travelling in an SUV in the
Hollywood Hills when they got into an altercation. The woman got out of the car, and
Peterson is accused of firing at her feet numerous times, injuring her. If convicted,
the defendant faces a maximum term of 22 years and eight months in state prison if
convicted as charged. The Los Angeles Police Department's Hollywood Division is
still investigating the matter.

1. What crime did he or she allegedly commit?

Assaulting Megan Thee Stallion in July, Tory Lanez was charged with
assault on Thursday. The above charges stem from allegations that Daystar
Peterson, known as Tory Lanez, allegedly shot someone and drove about
with a gun in his car on at least two other occasions.
2. Who was the victim?
The victim was Megan Pete, also known as Megan Thee Stallion.
3. Explain his or her actions from the point of view of one of the major
sociological paradigms
According to the Vulture report, Megan claimed she was arguing with
Lanez, his security, and her buddy in his car. Megan, in the front seat, got out.
Lanez allegedly shot her through the back window. Megan denied hitting
Lanez. She also denied Lanez's alleged romantic interest in Kylie Jenner.
Most suited sociological paradigm for this incident is conflict theory. Karl Marx
proposed the Conflict Theory, which states that society is perpetually in
conflict over limited resources. Domination and power, not consensus and
compliance, preserve social order, according to conflict theory. According to
conflict theory, people who have wealth and power want to keep it by
oppressing the poor and powerless. Conflict theory assumes that individuals
and groups will endeavor to enhance their own wealth and power. (Hayes,
2020)
4. What factors best explain how a person might be punished if convicted
of the crime?
The way Tory Lanez shot Megan Thee Stallion on her foot is
convincing enough for him to be arrested with Assault and if convicted as
charged, the defendant faces a possible maximum sentence of 22 years and
eight months in state prison.
How would Edwin Sutherland explain these patterns of power through
differential association theory?
According to Edwin Sutherland's differential association theory, the elite's
status is passed down from generation to generation because younger children
mimic the behavior of those near to them. He also claims that criminal behavior is a
product of process socialization learnt by those close to him/her, which results in
inheriting the same norms, values, and beliefs. They see criminal behavior and will
learn on their own.
He also discusses how, through this learning process, an individual develops
not only the abilities and procedures required to execute a crime, but also the
motives, urges, rationalizations, and attitudes that best describe an individual's
behavior. It states that learning is more than just imitating or reproducing behavior; it
is also about understanding and developing.
Sutherland's concluding prepositions emphasize the significance of claim
incentives in both illegal and law-abiding behavior. They cannot be the same, nor
can they be the product of common needs and ideals.
What crimes do these elite few getaway with?
The elites enjoy a high level of financial success. They have a tight grip on
practically everything. The shadow follows them if they do something, and the
murder of a person or group of people who threaten to bring down their legacy is
something that they can get away with rather simply if they do it.
