Once upon a time a lion was fast asleep in the forest. Then he was awakened by a little mouse
who was running up and down his back. The lion was angry, and thumped his big paw down
on to the mouse. Then he opened his mouth wide so he could eat him.
The mouse was very frightened and begged the king of the jungle not to eat him. He
promised that if the lion let him go he would never forget it and that one day he will be able
to return the favour.
The lion thought that was very funny. He roared with laughter. Then he let the mouse go.
Sometime later, the lion was caught in a trap. When the hunters who had set the trap returned,
they tied his legs together with a rope and tied him to a tree while they went away to fetch a
cart to carry him home.
Just at the moment, the little mouse passed by and saw what had happed to the lion. He
quickly ran over to him and began to chew through the ropes with which he had been tied. In
no time at all, the lion was free. The lion was very grateful. He remembered that the mouse
had said that one day he would help him, and he thanked the mouse for keeping his promise.
Then, without any further delay, he ran back into jungle away from the trap and the hunters.
While in the jungle the lion thought of how to return the favour. He gathered all the other
animals together and informed them of the importance of having a chief. The animals were
not pleased by his suggestion because they suspected that the lion wanted to impose himself
on them as the chief. Nonetheless, they just listened attentively. The lion further suggested
mouse as the new chief.
The animals failed to contain their anger, they stood up and went. However, hare being ever
curious pleaded with them to come back and hear out lion. Lion was very grateful to hare’s
support. The animals came back and lion told them why he wanted mouse to be chief. The
animals were not amused by this, especially hare who does not trust lion a bit. Hare secretly
believed that lion was up to some of his tricks. Most animals were concerned about mouse’s
size; they thought he was too small to rule the animal kingdom. Finally, lion convinced the
animals to give mouse a chance and became chief.
